Jane's Story

If anyone had told me that I would live in Chicago, I would have told them they had me mixed up with someone else. I was familiar with both coasts, but thought anything in between was all sod huts and prairie. I was wrong. Chicago is wonderful. I've lived here since 1972, but in my heart I'm still a Delawarean. I am the director of a literacy program on the University of Chicago campus. It's great work-frustrating-but great. If only there was more funding available, but don't get me started. I hope my old friends and classmates remember me as kind. I never did anything wild in school unless you count the time my friend and I took out her mother's car when we only had permits. We were so nervous, we thought a trooper from Penny Hill would stop us and say, "You two don't look like you have licenses. Get out of the car." Talk about over-developed consciences. I would love to see Frank Giamboy again. He was my favorite teacher. I became an English teacher because of him. I taught at Mt. Pleasant and all my old teachers became my colleagues. What a charge. I share my home with a dog and a cat (Izzy and Sport)and that's the way I like it. After my second divorce I looked up at the heavens and said, "Okay, I get it!" Now I'm happy that I only have to worry about Izzy, Sport and me. If I were to meet up with old classmates and they actually remembered me, they would be surprised at how "out there" I've become. I'm not afraid to say what's on my...Expand for more
mind. It's one of the perks of getting older I guess. I have loads of good memories of Mt. Pleasant and would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to my family, then spend the rest on supporting worthy causes, travel and plastic surgery. My current age is 64. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be old, old, old.. I was so completely wrong. In 10 years, I hope to be 74. I'm going to get there by staying alive. This is not a childhood memory per se. It was when I started 10th grade in the high school. I was having trouble with my locker combination and was going to be late to class. Rennie Schneider came over and helped me. He was just the kind of guy who maed the hearts of scared little 10th grade girls go pitty pat. I never forgot his small act of kindness even though I'm sure he forgot it 10 seconds after it was over. Later that year he was killed in a car accident. I hope that wherever he is he knows he's remembered for being kind. I hope some people have similar memories of me. 12/3/09 My living situation has changed as I have adopted another dog. His name is Farley. He's a yorkie. All my pets are adopted. The dogs were rescued from puppy mills and the cat wondered into the back yard and I invited him in. I love pets. They are always so happy to see you and give you unconditional love. You could have been murdering people all day, but they don't care. To them you are wonderful.
