Janet's Story

Life Life has presented me with the bitter and the sweet, but I am glad and grateful to be alive and well. On the bitter side, I have suffered through cancer, the deaths of my father and sister and a host of wretched jobs. I never married, although I wanted to very much. Deep down under, I was always shy. On the sweet side, I am retired and free to travel. I especially love camping in Canada, especially in the far north, and I'm writing a book about it. I have lots of material comforts. I have a B.A. Degree in Sociology, an M.A. in Sociology and a B.Mus. cum laude in piano performance. I read ravenously, and I have many friends. I was born into the best family anyone could ever have. The important thing for me is not that I'm loved, but that I HAVE BEEN loved. In this sense I am very rich. My profile doesn't tell much about me. I'm nothing special, but I'm a nice person. I'm a very happy person;I think we CHOOSE happiness. I don't have a pet, but I plan on getting a dog one of these days. I've lived in New Mexico since 1970, and I love it here. I'd enjoy hearing from some of my high school and college friends. I've changed a great deal. When I was young, I was very narrow-minded and critical of others. I had to grow up; and, as all of you know, that's the most difficult achievement of all! I have such vivid memories of all of you. Why not drop me a line? Yes, I'll answer you. Just make sure I don't think your emails are...SPAM! School School was all work for me. I worked harder than most people thought. Now, decades later, I wish I'd had more fun. I remember most of my classes and teachers with fondness. I especially remember Mrs. Burley, Mrs. McGibbon, Miss Bingaman, Mr.LeVan and Mr. Richards. One of my happiest memories was when I was inducted into the National Honor Society. I was totally shocked. Even now, at age ...Expand for more
62, I remember the "cheers" we chanted during a ballgame. I remember scrambling for a decent seat on the school bus. I remember the lockers that always seemed to stick when you were in a hurry. I remember how hot it was the day we graduated--I had almost nothing on under that robe! And most of all, I remember my special friends: Janet Phillips, Carol Wilkinson, Mary Ament and Frank Farmer. I wonder where they are now. College When I entered college, I had no idea of what I wanted to do. The sociology department told me I was a "natural" in the social sciences, so I found myself majoring in sociology and having double minors in philosophy and anthropology. A few years later I regretted not majoring in music. I was hungry for Bach and Chopin and very bored with Durkheim and Weber. Later in my life I DID have the chance to learn classical piano. It was my life's dream. I loved my first college best though. I have always been sorry that I didn't fight back at the shabby way I was treated by the faculty in music school. In fact, this has been one of my life's major regrets. However, I will never regret what I learned in music. It has added so much to my life! I was always a good student; I worked very hard, and I really wanted to learn. Workplace Mostly I hated working. I LOVE being retired now! I had various summer jobs to help pay college tuition. After college and graduate school, I worked as a statistician and a personnel specialist in the Federal Government; I hated every minute! I established my own business of piano teaching in 1982; I liked this job mostly, and I especially liked not having a...boss! Later, I worked in the public schools as a substitute teacher. This was the job that I truly LOVED! It was very fulfilling, and I really enjoyed teens! I learned a great deal too! But nothing beats being retired!
