Janet's Story

When I was a kid I used to get teased a lot about my name. I heard "What's the story, Story?" and "Tell me a story, Story" more times than I could count. However, I have to say that it's an appropriate last name because I do like to tell stories, and now I'll tell you mine. I'll do my best to make it humorous and interesting, but I don't promise to be brief ... I know my limits :) After graduating from Saguaro I went to Lake Forest College, a college in the north suburbs of Chicago. Anita Volgyi (Grinis) from our class attended as well. My parents were nonplussed when I announced that I wanted to attend a small liberal arts college and live in the dorms, believing that I had failed to notice that (a) my dad was a teacher, (b) my mom started law school my junior year in high school so my dad was the only wage earner, and (c) there were 5 kids in my family. I think they thought I was a little insane. Luckily Lake Forest gave me great financial aid and I was able to attend and thoroughly enjoy 4 years of living in the dorm, trips to Chicago on the weekends, and oh yes, getting my degree in history in 1983. Naively, I assumed that those who said that the only thing I was going to be able to do with a history degree was to teach or go to law school. I was so convinced that I'd get hired by a business which could see that what my college promised - "You can do anything with a liberal arts degree" - was true and that I was the perfect candidate for a great job. I was wrong. After 8 months doing temp work trying to find a job, and about 3 years working for Social Security and not earning much I decided I needed to go to graduate school. Since my abilities in science and math were sorely lacking (let's just say I didn't distinguish myself and high school bio or chem), that narrowed my choices. Since I come from a family of lawyers (try not to shudder) and my then-husband was a lawyer, law school was a logical choice and I started at ASU in 1988, graduating in 1991. After law school I followed both my mother and said husband into the field of Juvenile law, where I have happily practiced for over 27 years. I am self-employed with an office in old town Scottsdale. For the past 20 years, my practice has focused on the adoption of children from the foster care system. I represent grandparents, aunts and uncles, other relatives, and foster parents in adopting their children. It's an amazing practice, one I like to call "Happy Law." In 2010 my sister Sara (class of 80) joined me after a previous career in social work. She speaks fluent Spanish which is a wonderful asset and it's great to have 2 lawyers in the office so we can take turns going on vacation in the summer. Our other sister Jennifer (class of 86) also works with us. People always a...Expand for more
sk how it works out for the 3 of us to work together but we really do get along well and I know I'm very lucky to have such a great team. I was married for about 7 years in the 80's and early 90's, and have been single for over 25 years. We didn't have any kids, but I enjoy being an aunt to several nieces and nephews. A couple of years ago I met a great guy, Tony, and we have been long-distance dating while he worked out some things to be able to move to Phoenix. He'll be here soon and I can't wait for this next chapter in my life to begin. One of my favorite things to do is travel and I've been lucky to go lots of places both in the U.S. and abroad over the years. My first trip to Europe was in 1993 with my 2 sisters and 2 friends. We had a budget of $25.00 a day for lodging, food, and transportation. Now that was a challenge! So many of our decisions were made based on their cost, and while I didn't mind staying in cheap hostels and hotels, I did get rather tired of all the bread, cheese and tomato sandwiches to save money on food. After awhile I started craving a hot meal, and a few times we reneged on our pledge never to eat at McDonald's in order to get an affordable hot meal. On the bright side we learned that a bottle of wine shared among the 5 of us was much cheaper than a couple of Cokes so that was an easy decision. Being broke meant really determining what was important which meant yes to the Musee d'Orsay in Paris with lots of Impressionist paintings but no to the Louvre when we discovered they no longer offered free Sunday admission! That trip was the longest one I've ever taken to Europe - 8 countries in 5 weeks - only 1 of us had a job waiting when we got home but it was worth it. Since then I've been to Europe 7 more times, with a bigger budget and smaller itinerary of countries to see. It's fun to stay a few nights in each place and I usually stay in just 1 or 2 countries so that I'm not spending too much time riding trains from 1 town to the next. My last trip was in the spring of 2018 with a friend; we went to Belgium and the Netherlands for about 2 weeks. The tulips were beautiful and we loved seeing all the sights. I had dreamed of going to Europe since I was a teenager so getting to go so many times has been an awesome experience. In the U.S., one of my favorite places to go is Oregon and Washington (no surprise that those are summer trips to escape the heat). Mount Rainier was absolutely beautiful and I also love Olympic National Park. Portland is also very cool. I was just in Santa Fe in January and if you ever go there, definitely go to Meow Wolf. It's a trippy experience.. I'm looking forward to seeing people at the reunion. For those who made it to the end - thanks for reading my story! Janet
