Janice's Story

You probably don't remember me from high school. I spent a lot of time not dating and not being in the social whirl during high school. I graduated fairly high in the class and went on to college in Minnesota. I wanted to get as far away from Little Rock as possible, and I'm still not sure I'd like to be in Little Rock for any extended period of time. In the 40 years since graduating from Central, I've been married (and divorced) twice, borne two sons (one in LA, one in NC), spent 27 years in the Army (the first black woman to be an Academy Professor at West Point), survived breast cancer, learned to live with debilitating osteoarthritis, and retired to the wonderful weather in San Antonio, Texas. I still love to read, write (I'm a member of Romance Writers of America), and travel--three years in Germany, several cruises, a two-week trip to China (2007), Greece, Italy, and Alaska (OK, I know it's not a foreign country, but Sarah Palin sort of makes it a place beyond belief) in 2008. I'm not yet a grandmother, but my younger son and his wife are 'working on it,' which probably means they're having a really good time. I certainly hope so. Now that I'm single again, I'm praying for a wonderfully good man who understands what 'till death do us part' really means. I don't care what color he is--it IS 2009, after all--but I am a height snob. I'm 5'9". Is it too much to ask for a mature, not-shallow man who also happens to be 6'1" or taller? Politically, I'm a conservative Democrat. You may t...Expand for more
hink that's an impossibility, but if there can be moderate Republicans, there can be folks like me. I am a committed Christian--which means that (even at my advanced age) I believe that sex should happen only within marriage. And I very much hope that there will be sex in my future (smile). And to those who say that Democrats can't be real Christians, I say, stop emulating the scribes and Pharisees. But, I digress. To those who think it matters--I retired from the Army as an O6 (colonel) with a doctorate in English Education from Columbia University in New York City. I'm now teaching at the University of Texas at San Antonio as an adjunct; I don't want to work full-time. Considering the "pay" given to adjuncts, it's a good thing I have retired income. I tell my students (only if they ask) that I teach as my community service. I'm sure there's more to tell. As I think about it, I'll add more. Adding more: I can barely believe it myself, but I've been walking around for nearly two months with a broken right hip. I actually heard the break while I was on a working trip to Daytona Beach (I was grading AP examinations). Amazingly enough, it didn't hurt any more than a pulled muscle, so I didn't even think about the possibility of a real break. I've been taking Fosamax since 1998. Why would I even think about a hip fracture? It is now August 13. I see the orthopedist (finally) tomorrow morning. I plan to be back on my feet well in advance of the class reunion--which starts on my birthday.
