Janice's Story
I graduated from OGHS in 1978 and went to MiraCosta jr. College for one semester before starting my long term college life at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. After graduating with my Bachelor's degree from Harding, I stuck around Searcy for one year while I started working in the school system as a Speech Pathologist. I left the next year for Columbia, Missouri where I started my Master's program in Speech Pathology, but met my husband instead. Paul Stephens and I got married on May 26, 1984. I worked in the schools at the time, so finding a job was pretty easy as we moved around for his job. In 1992, my firstborn, Wesley was born and in 1996, my second born, Carter was born. be). In 1996, after Carter was born, I quit my job and started my own business, doing Speech Therapy. Two years later, Paul came home with a new job offer that took us to SW Missouri for 5 years. I took my business with us and we thrived in Lebanon, MO. Something was up with the boys (both of them, although we really only noticed it with Wesley at first). We went to the psychiatrist and found out that he had Asperger Syndrome, a form of Autism. We later found out that Carter had it, too. When we went back to St. Louis, we looked for the right schools for the boys and then found a house within that district. Paul and I divorced after 30 years of marriage. The boys and I all live in Columbia, Missouri where they both go to school. I am now working online with kids in Illinois and enjoying it very much!!!
