Janice's Story

My life in a nutshell: I left Belle Chasse right after graduation to go to college out of state. While I was in school my first year, my family moved to Ohio (they thought that my older brother in Germany and I wouldn't find them, I think) and that's where I have spent the last 37 years of my life. (My dad was in the Air Force and we moved frequently while I was growing up.) I'm married (35 years on July 17th) and have 2 sons. The oldest (24) is currently working on his master's degree in paleontology in Milwaukee; he is also a research assistant/teaching assistant. He went to China last year due to the research position--I've never been there! My younger son (21) is working full time and going to school for his aircraft mechanic's license /Associate Degree and then will transfer to a 4 year college to get the related bachelor's degree. (I can 't remember what exactly it's called.) My husband is an engineer who works for a company that promotes and tries to support small to medium size companies with their up and coming products, etc. from the Third Frontier arena. e local, state, and federal governents and the businesses to do this and to help to make these businesses continue to be viable. After college, I worked as a CPHQ (Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality--I am definitely certifiable!) In 2 hospitals for 22 years doing Quality Assessment and Utilization Review. When I was needed more by my family (kids & parents) I left the hospital and currently I work as a Special Needs Assistant at our local middle school. I work with kids who have mild learning disabilities in the 7th grade and with 6th, 7th & 8th grade kids in the Resourse Room (Autistism, Down's syndrome, Asperger's Syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc) I really enjoy doing this. Some days it's rough depending on how the day's going with each individual kid, but it's kind of like the weather--stick around and it'll change! Currently, I'm working on getting my parents' condo ready to put it up for sale. My mom passed away 16 months ago and my dad has dementia and lives in a facility where they take excellent care of dementia and Alzheimer's patients. they also have assisted living which was where my dad was until this year. That about sums it up!
