Janice's Story

Life is good. A week after graduating from Northern Illinois in 1968, I married the man of my dreams, moved to Florida, and got my Masters Degree at Stetson University. For several years, I taught retarded children--that's what they were called then and I'm not concerned enough about political correctness to rename those precious children. After our son was born, I was a stay-at-home mom at our country home. Even after our daughter was born, I continued tending a large garden, milking dairy goats, gathering eggs from our chickens and working hard to keep our yard horse who was hell-bent on being a house horse out of the house (read that slowly. I hope you get it.) When Whistlestar saw me drive out the gate, she used her prehensile nose to open the back porch screen door and stroll into the kitchen where she would knock over canisters of sugar and flour. You haven't seen a real mess until you find that a horse has been in your house for 2-3 hours. My Mother Earth phase lasted until I was too busy raising children to keep up with that life style. I moved on to my real passion, needlework. I've taught sewing, English smocking, quilting and machine embroidery around the country, in Australia, Japan and Puerto Rico. Between teaching trips, I wrote articles and designed projects for needlework magazines (thank you Miss Drummond aka Mrs.Hamsher for all your great writing instruction!). Now, I sew for my four grandchildren, two of whom I homeschooled for three years, develop projects and write tutorials for Brother sewing machine company at blog.brothersews.com, keep up with needlework on my sewing blog at Janice Ferguson Sews.com. (skip spaces) and am very involved with our church. Since leaving West Aurora, life has been good. Because we have lived in the same old 1926 house since 1972, we have wonderful friends and deep roots in the community. Our cabin in the mountains of North Carolina is our favorite getaway and we enjoy spending time there with our children and grandchildren. Bob and I are happy and healthy, our children are fabulous, responsible, happily married, successful and, of course, brilliant and good looking, too. They are terrific parents to our four grandchildren who are delightful and, of course, beautiful, brilliant, talented, well-behaved, etc. just like your grandchildren. Some of my fondest memories are of happy times at West Aurora and I hope all my classmates are happy and well. I look forward to reading your stories. ~~~~~~Updates---I can't believe we are 71!!!! In the past few years I have reconnected with several classmates, but not enough! Susan Kleinschmidt Rydberg and I have been in touch.. She, too, is well and happy, enjoying her first great grandchild. Carole Glasco Christensen and I visited a few times, once at her lovely home in SC where I spent the night on my way to teach in Myrtle Beach and once here at my home when she and her husband stopped on the way further south. Her wonderful husband passed away several months later but Carole is active with choral and dance groups. My dear friend Jim Vaughan, with whom our families vacationed for many summers, has been in touch and even shared his reunion book with me. I've corresponded with Randy Morris and am facebook friends with Carol Harwig, Marjean Anderson Walls, Denise Salle, Darwin Hoeft, Dottie Lavoy, Barbara Jordan and others. I would LOVE to hear from any classmates, here or on facebook. Our time together at West Aurora was so important to all of us, and each of you are an important part of my youth. So let's be in touch! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UPDATE June, 2019 So hard to believe that it's been 54 years since we all graduated. But when I ache and groan after a few days of heavy gardening, it's not so hard to believe. Bob and I have been blessed with good health and a lifetime of happiness, so I can't complain. Most of my time is spent developing projects and writing tutorials for Brother at blog. brothersews. com --skip spaces if you want to take a look. e release campaigns. I love being able to do what I love from home. This sure beats all those years on the road, teaching around the country and across the ocean, though I loved it then. Our son and family were here from NJ for Easter and we loved seeing them. It's still hard to say goodbye, after having them just 30 minutes away until 3 years ago. 15 yo Laurel soon will be off theater camp and 14 yo Robert is all about video games and playing the piano. He will be with us when Laurel is at theater camp, mostly to give his mother a break and to give us more time with him. Every Thursday for the past three months I've led a group of ladies at church sewing dresses and shorts for children in Ghana. I cut all the kits to maintain some quality control--no dresses or shorts made from old curtains! In two weeks 77 dresses and 44 pairs of shorts will go to Africa with church member and family dr. on his second medical mission to that impoverished country. This was such a satisfying project. In July we will head to NC for a week of R&R and then pick up our two younger grandchildren (6.5 and 10 yo) from camp there. We'll spend a few more days at the cabin then bring them home with us for a few more days of grandparent delight. That will be followed by some serious napping. We've also taken to cruising and enjoying it, much to my surprise. At first we went just because it would be a week with our daughter and her family (including the two younger grands), but we had a great time. We have another cruise planned for Sept. with the same shipmates. Lots to look forward to. So what are you all up to? I read bits and pieces on facebook but I'd love to hear more about what you all are doing in our "golden years." I hope you are all happy and healthy and enjoying life. The years are passing too quickly to miss out on any happiness. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UPDATE October 2021: Since Covid hit, our life and most of yours, I expect, has changed. We are still healthy and for the most part, happy. But we have restricted our activities and stayed closer to home. I'm so sorry to have missed our Class of 1964 75th birthday celebration and would have ventured out for that but for a shoulder injury. According to all reports, it was a fabulous event, organized by event planning wizards Dottie and Larry LaVoy and their reunion team. Throughout Covid I have continued leading the ladies of my church with our Garments for Ghana sewing mission. We have just sent 265 dresses and shorts to the children in the impoverished villages of that east African nation. Like so many of you, our life seems to revolve around our children and grands. Again, we spent a fun filled summer week in the mountains of NC with them, though the children did not attend camp this year due to the pandemic. When we're not with them, we're gardening, trying to keep up with 3 acres of ever-growing weeds, but clearly losing the battle. Oh, well. I like the jungle look. Sadly, we lost our beloved 3.5yo Pyrenees/Shepherd mix Samson to a genetic liver failure. Our Delilah, his littermate, grieved with us until we got Sebastian, an 8 month old Pyrenees/Shepherd mix. He had lived in a farm-like situation, well cared for with other animals but not socialized and had never been in a house. It has taken us a full year to civilize this gorgeous, lovable boy who earned the nickname, "The White Devil." After digging up our landscape plants, chewing up towels, my glasses, shoes, woodwork, furniture, and more, he has finally settled down. This 110 lb. beauty has enriched our life and brought Delilah back from depression. I still create projects and tutorials for Brother sewing machine company and love it. I would love to read about other classmates but I seem to be the only one who prattles on about my life. I don't even know if anyone reads this. On facebook I am friends with some of you, but would really like to hear about your lives. Please be in touch with me there, Janice Stark Ferguson, or add your story here on Classmates. It's been such a long time since 1964.
