Janice's Story
Graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in Education. Married my college sweetheart. Taught fifth grade and sixth grade at Hillcrest Elementary, my old school, for two years. Took time off from teaching while my two kids were young, then taught reading in a Title I program in Olympia.
In 1986, I separated from my first husband and went to Central Washington University, where I earned an M.Ed. degree as a Reading Specialist in 1988. Just as I was finishing my degree, they announced an opening for a teaching position in the Education Dept., and I was fortunate to be given the job. It was a temporary position, just one year, but great experience teaching future teachers how to teach reading. Somehow, as a result of that experience, (and now I'm not sur...Expand for more
e why!) I was inspired to go for a doctorate so I could qualify for a university teaching position. After investigating several different universities to attend, I chose The University of Georgia in Athens, GA.
After 4 years at UGA,I taught at a small university in upstate New York, then returned to GA to finish my dissertation. Finally earned the Ed.D.. in 1998. Since then, I've worked on a few short-term projects at UGA, taught in public and private schools as a Reading Specialist, In 2009, published curriculum materials on GA History that have been distributed to approx 100 schools. Now I'm semi-retired; working part-time as Reading Specialist for a non-profit tutoring center, developing more curriculum materials in my spare time, and continuing some writing projects.
