Janie's Story

Life After graduating high school, I went to American College of Health Careers, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where I earned my EKG Technician's License, and worked at St. Anthony's Hospital there and was registered in the United States Emergency contact system. In 1970, I returned to Carlsbad and quickly learned that the Carlsbad Hospital had never heard of an EKG Technician. So, I earned my State Certified Nurse Aide certificate. Later in 1970, I married Alex Patrick (the only love of my life, my hero, my wisdom, my rock) after he returned home from Vietnam. Together, we formed a traveling band, performing modern country music including songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers and many others. The band was offered a European tour, but 2 members had just returned from Vietnam and both vowed to never leave the United States again. Who could blame them? But, what an experience that would have been, eh? In the mid to late 70's, I gave birth to the world's most wonderful 3 sons, In the early 80's I attended NMSU-C studying Public Relations, where I was the Public Relations Officer for Phi Beta Lambda, Managing Editor of the NMSU-C newspaper and founded a student body organization called United Students - a group comprised of students and faculty. I was presented with an award, reserved only for faculty for Distinguished and Outstanding Service. At that time, I was the only person outside of faculty to ever receive one. While at NMSU-C, I performed a one person concert, billed as a "Potpourri of Vocal Music", singing classical Arias in Soprano, Middle of the Road Country Music and Blues. In the early 1980's, I had the privilege of being the only woman to ever perform on the Carlsbad Flying X Chuck Wagon stage, singing Old West/Cowboy music as a fill-in singer for an ill performer, In 1986, we moved to Ohio for 20 years. I first began working at Ohio Magazine, where I learned many areas of publishing, and worked as well, as a free lance writer. I was named in Who's Who in America in publishing and ancillary sales.. While there, I continued with my art and singing. And just for fun, as a single performing artist, I sang at Ohio State University, The Columbus Country Club, Holiday company parties and private parties. And took 2nd place in a city wide singing competition It was only right that I took the next step in my professional career. I then worked at Laser Karaoke Industries, the only importer of Sony, Hitachi and Panasonic Professional Karaoke Units, and Professional grade exponent equipment in the United States. I worked there as Vice President of Sales, my clients being primary wholesale companies in the United States, Canada and Australia, who distributed to Retail stor...Expand for more
es across America. And I worked with some of the United States largest Music Stores. I also, developed and introduced the idea of placing Karaoke into schools as a learning tool and esteem builder. Again I was named in Who's Who in America in a specialized market of Music. I moved from there to Qwest Communications(now Century Link) in Columbus Ohio. That's where I had the best boss in the world. I no longer wanted to be "the boss", so worked under a VP, but eventually ended up directing his Directors and their Assistants in organizing and streamlining work and efficiency towards effective up-line reporting, thereby eliminating the use of paper products. I am now retired in Carlsbad. Thank You Jesus! I am a country girl again!!! And, I have 3 sons and 2 grandsons, Count 'em! 2 !!! :-) I love living in Carlsbad again, everything is so much greener than I remember. I attended the 66-69 class reunion, my first one, and it was great! Every one should go to these, I was surprised at how few of us were there for such an expanse of years. I met a new friend there and found an old friend on Classmates.com. What a wonderful idea! I also attended the 40 year reunion of the class of 1969, and had such a good time, meeting with old friends and meeting new ones. Alas, I attended my last reunion as a Widow. Never being without an escort, my 35 year old son said it would be an honor to escort me to the Class Reunion. It was a wonderful experience for him, (seeing how the oldsters do it) and wonderful for me too. I loved seeing everyone. I am now moving to Oklahoma City where my middle son, who is a nurse, is living in a hospital due to IPF and is fighting to be put on the transplant list, for a double lung transplant. I will be with him there until he makes full recovery. My plans were to move to New Braunfels Texas, but my mind has changed to move closer to my grandsons in Ohio, but where it's not so cold. Perhaps, Lexington Kentucky. I hear there is great weather there with blue grass. So, I will probably never attend another Class Reunion. If you read this, please think it over and attend a reunion if you've never done so. They are wonderful! You'd think people would change, and they have.... They are more wonderful and loving than you remember! An update to my story. I am now living in Oklahoma City. My son had his double lung transplant on July 17th and returned home 12 days later. He is still healing and that will probably take a full year. He has beat all odds and the prognosis is now living another 20 to 25 years! But, people with transplants are living so much longer now, and I just know he will live a long, healthy, happy life. Now I have to decide where I'm going to live. I'm not too happy with this weather!!! LOL!
