Janis's Story

Life I met my husband Chuck 28 years ago, during sales training for Baldwin Piano Co. in Arkansas during the week of the 3 Mile Island nuclear event (1979). We actually met on a tour bus, transporting the seminar participants from one factory in Greenwood, MS to the other in Conway, AR. My Kids: It's hard to believe they are now adults! Cary moved to New Orleans to join the rest of the family 3 years ago. He lost all his belongings in Hurricane Katrina, but is getting his life back in order, still working as a bartender at Coop's, and hopes to finish college eventually. Adam is the jazz pianist I always wanted to be. He occasionally takes lessons from some of our fabulous local pro players, and works as a bartender in the French Quarter. Jarret keeps us laughing (usually!); he now attends the University of New Orleans, majoring in screenwriting. They have all grown up to be really neat people that I like to spend time with! I hope we always stay close! My Job: For the past 15+ years, I've been an independent Macintosh computer consultant, specializing in small business workflow solutions. I have had a variety of temporary and part-time jobs, including being an office assistant to a consulting engineer. I'm learning a lot about the offshore oil industry -- quite a change from my beginnings as a musician and teacher! Both Chuck and I now work for MacSpeech, a Mac-only speech recognition software company. He is their Chief Evangelist, and I now work as his administrative assistant/roadie when he travels around the country making MacSpeech presentations to Apple Stores and Mac User Groups. Life is good! School Elementary school - I attended St. Gertrude School in Franklin Park IL from first through fifth grades. I started taking piano lessons from Sister Cecelia in 3rd grade and participated in the Junior Great Books program in 4th grade. Then my family moved to far west suburban Lisle, where I attended St. Joan of Arc School for grades 6-8. I continued piano study with Genevieve Mitchell, and perfomed in recitals and contests. High school - made the big jump to public school, after a lifetime in Catholic school. Good old Lisle Community High School! I spent lots of time involved in the choir and drama club, and was elected to the National Honors Society and International Thespian Society. I won the Lisle Woman's Club piano contest, and attended Northwestern University as a music cherub in the summer of 1969. That was also the fateful summer for the Cubs -- truly a memorable time! College I was a vocal music/piano major at Illinois Wesleyan University. I fi...Expand for more
rst lived in Munsell Hall, later moving to Pfeiffer Hall for junior/senior years. As a freshman, I pledged Delta Omicron Music Fraternity, later serving as the rush chairman. It's still a great rush to meet up with or read about DO sisters around the world. I enjoyed voice lessons with Mrs. Drexler and Mark Goetzinger, and violin class with Mr. Mancinelli. I remember the construction of the new music building which was built after the great Presser Hall fire; I still have an army blanket I filched from one of the newly delivered grand pianos in the new building! Along with several music school cohorts, we enjoyed "kidnapping" the garbage cans and fake trees, placing them into the elevator installed in the circular stairwell of Presser Hall. Although we as a class were all pretty fine musicians, we were the last of a breed that remembered how to have a fun life as well. I'll never forget Dr. Streeter racing across the quad after Janet Frevert, with a large Luger water-pistol in hand! Workplace My first teaching job was teaching vocal music 1-12 in Gilman IL. A far cry from suburban Chicago where I grew up! My first HS choir had 17 sopranos and 1 bass Ñ college was great, but NEVER prepared me for this. It was a real experience, and I stayed for two years: that small district hadn't offered tenure to a vocal music teacher in over 20 years (something they never stated during the interview!) Moved back to suburban Chicago and started working for Baldwin Piano & Organ Co., in sales at Fox Valley Mall. That was pretty fun, too! While attending their Piano Sales Training School in AR & MS, I met Chuck, my once and always love. We started working together a few months after we met, and within the year we were married and starting our own music store, with me teaching piano on the side. Our best years have always been when we worked together Ð something most married couples can NOT do! After the Music Mall, we worked apart for a while, and then I joined the Mac consulting business Chuck started. We haven't always worked together: I spent some time teaching school in WI. Since moving to New Orleans, I have done lots of different things: taught computer classes to preschoolers, worked at a banner-making company, worked as assistant to a petroleum engineer, been a bookkeeper, a Mac computer consultant, a cheesecake baker. Never a dull moment. Now I do most of these things in a gigantic juggling act, AND I'm working with Chuck for a Mac-only speech recognition software company Ñ MacSpeech, Inc., based in New Hampshire Ñ right here in New Orleans. Y'all would LOVE this life...
