Janne's Story
After graduation, I went up to Cal and graduated in 1972 (took off to have my oldest daughter) with a BA in History with a specialization in Communist China (I have NO idea what I thought I was going to do with it!). My second daughter was born shortly after I graduated and in 1973 my husband graduated from law school at King Hall at UC Davis. Davis wasn't nearly as bad as we thought it would be -- it was WORSE!!! We moved to Illinois for several months and then we were stationed at Fort Sheridan, IL, just north of Chicago when my husband was commissioned in the JAG Corps. We spent 4 years at Fort Sheridan -- the longest I lived anywhere until I moved to SC -- and then lived in Lake Forest, IL, while my husband practiced law in various capacities until he relocated to LA in 1979 and we divorced. My daughters and I relocated to Washington, DC, and then back to Palo Alto and stayed in Palo Alto until I was accepted to Law School at the University of South Carolina. I believe I am the fourth generation to graduate from law school at USC (here in South Carolina, "USC" means "University of South Carolina"). My "baby boy" (now 27) was born during law school and I was admitted to the Bar in South Carolina in May 1987. nd opened my own firm -- Law Offices of Janne Berry Osborne -- in July 1990. In July 2007 I decided I hated SC, hated practicing law, hated my clients, hated the judges, yada yada yada. So, on June 1, 2008, my husband, my Teacup Poodle and my 2 cats in our SUV and a 16' trailer with my older daughter, her husband and my 2 granddaughters in our pickup truck and a 14' trailer set off to relocate to................Anchorage, AK. The drive was unbelievably gorgeous and we loved Anchorage. However, our home in SC did not sell so we had to choose between walking away from the house or going back. On October 12, 2008, my husband, our Teacup Poodle and our 2 cats set off in our SUV (my daughter and her family stayed so I have someplace to stay when we visit) and returned to SC, where I picked my practice back up -- with some major differences. I am maintaining my office in my home, I have no staff -- and I love it. Yes, I work 7 days a week, but I can watch the Edisto River behind our house while I read correspondence, I can watch the doe and her faun across the canal while I talk on the phone. I still hate the 100 degree, 110% humidity which plays hell with my asthma and I miss the dry cool, cold, frigid, freezing air in Anchorage, but I do love my work and the gratitude from my clients when I returned made the return to SC well worth it.
