Jared's Story
My work history:
After High School I worked at the Ford City Post Office and attended Moraine Valley College. After about 6 months of sorting magazines & circulars (actually reading the good ones going over seas to the men in service), I was assigned the task of memorizing all the postal codes for the state of Ohio. I actually didn't like that and all the mandatory overtime (Postal management would inform you about an hour before the end of your shift to work two or more hours). I decided this wasn't for me.
I found a position with Peter Shannon & Company delivering computerized pay checks to the race tracks and other small firms. They also trained me with computer equipment.
I was a God when I showed up at the race tracks on payday. I was given VIP treatment. That was really cool.

After about 7 months, there was a budget problem and was let go but fortunately my boss was real close to Ron Manka, one of the managers from the Chicago Public Schools computer department.
In December of 1969 I started with the Chicago Public Schools. My 1st two weeks had 4 paid holidays. I said, This work place is for me! I married in 1975 and have 3 children. My career at the Chicago Public Schools began with tabulating equipment to Computer room operator to Documenting System Software; to computer support (Terminals & PCs) for all schools and administration departments; to Project management and Department move coordinator and finally Operations Manager. I retired after 35 years on my 55th birthday.
I now work part time at Woodbine Golf course and enjoy all the amenities of golf.
