Been a busy couple of decades... from Albany High I went to Tunisia for a year on AFS (Yep, I chose a 5th High School year), where I had my eyes opened about the world.
Came back to Slug U., e.g. UCSC where I had a wicked cool time learning & working (at The Whole Earth on Campus, then The Great Bear in Los Gatos, if you gotta know) & partying... I guess it was that last one that I was know for at the time. I spent a quarter in the south of France, further whetting my appetite for travel.
After graduating from Santa Cruz, I went into the Peace Corps, where I spent 2-1/2 years in Mauritania (look it up, heh) in a mud hut in the Sahara, teaching health & digging latrines. I reupped for a third year in the Central African Republic, where I wound up living in a village in the middle of a game reserve in the Congo Rainbasin. My job there was to set up a school for the local pygmy tribes, but I also did a Gorilla habituation project for a while, tracking them & chimps in the jungle. I've been chased by chimpanzees & elephants, eaten live termite queens & watched forest elephants frolic in the mud - great stuff.

pt (we had to find a way out on our own, avoiding border patrols & bandits while floating down river on a darkened boat at night), and I wound up back in the Bay Area. I taught in East Oakland at a very marginalized elementary school - Parker Elementary - for 3 years. I met my wife to be while out dancing one night; we dated for almost a year before Liberty popped the question. I then taught at Bentley for a year before I went into Medical School.
During medical school we lived in Belize, Florida, Maine, Atlanta,& Las Vegas. About halfway through my son, Sage, was born, and that changed everything. after I graduated, I opted for a stay-at-home dad route rather than pursue the 80 to 100 hour weeks of residency, and have been living here in Seattle ever since. Now that he's in preschool, I'm starting to look at jobs again, but we'll see.
What I'd like to do is open up a free PreK-12 private school for at risk kids, one that emphasize languages from preschool on up. We'd also focus on service learning - e.g., learn school subjects from 9-3, and then take what we've learned into the community & do service projects for a couple of hours each day. During the summer, we'd be overseas doing service projects in developing countries...
Ah, well, it's a pipe dream.. maybe if I win the lottery...
