Jay's Story

It's 10:35 P.M., November 8, 1979 and the TV network ABC broadcasts "Iran Crisis: America Held Hostage" with Frank Reynolds. I had always considered myself a "news junkie", and I thought that this program was going to satisfy my daily fix. The first scene I saw were thousands of Iránian men wearing headbands marching in a procession while beating themselves on their backs with chains; Reynolds tells us that it's some form of submission in obedience to "The Will of God" . "Wow" I Thought, What kind of God demands that from his followers? So I hopped over the fence that separated my yard from my brother's backyard. I felt I should ask him; "What gives?" after all he went to college and studied comparative religions, so he should know. Also he was a member of The Bahá'í Faith which has its origin in Irán. He informs me that most of these people are paid to put on this demonstration, and so we wonder how much devotion would they have if they were truly made to suffer. Through the course of the evening we discussed various world events throughout history and how all of these problems could have been more effectively dealt with if we [Humanity] would have applied spiritual principals to solve our problems rather than resort to violence. He goes on to tell me that all Prophets of God have laid down spiritual principals for humanity to follow and that Bahá'ís believe in a single, imperishable God, the creator of all things, including all the creatures and forces in the universe. Though inaccessible directly, God is nevertheless seen as conscious of his creation, with a mind, will and purpose. And that Bahá'ís believe God expresses this will at all times and in many ways, including through a series of Messengers in which Bahá'ís refer to as Manifestations of God or divine educators. In expressing God's intent, these Manifestations are seen to establish religion in the world. Thus they are seen as an intermediary between God and humanity. Well, I hadn't been much of a religious guy, but I always felt that there was something that put this all in motion, I guess that made me Agnostic, I didn't know what I didn't believe. He offered me a couple of books and pamphlets so I took them home with me and put them on a shelf. Nearly a week had passed when I decided to try a little reading before I went to sleep, so I picked up one of the books entitled "The Revelation of Bahá'u'lláh" Vol I. [First of four volumes on the Writings of the Founder of the Bahá'í Faith during His forty-year ministry, describing their contents, including much as yet not translated, with descriptions of the circumstances of the time. Vol. 1 covers Bahá'u'lláh's period of exile in Baghdád, 1853-63] While I lay there mentally reading to myself, I found myself beginning to drift off to sleep, so I decided to read aloud to myself so I could remain awake until I finished at least a few more chapters. The next morning as I was getting up for work, I remembered thinking about the penetrating insights that were discussed in those few chapters. Later the next day, I couldn't wait for my day at work to end so I could get back to reading. I thought that ev...Expand for more
en if Bahá'u'lláh hadn't made the claim that he was God's latest messenger, that those words that I read certainly came from a source that was not of this world. I also remember that I should have listened to my Uncle long ago while I was visiting his farm in Wisconsin, near his farmhouse I saw a flock of geese! They were apparently flying to look for a warmer area down south, but had been caught in the snow storm. I guess the storm had become too blinding for the geese to fly or see where they were going. They were stranded on his farm, with no food or shelter, unable to do more than flap their wings and fly around in aimless circles. I felt bad for them and I wanted to help them. So I thought to myself, "The barn would be a great place for them to stay! It's warm and safe in there" So I opened the barn doors for them. I waited, watching them, hoping that they would notice the open barn and go inside. But they didn't even notice the barn or realize what it meant for them. I moved closer towards them with my arms in a outstretched fashion to try to gather them together, but they just scattered and moved everywhere but toward the barn. I went to get some bread, broke it up, and made a trail of crumbs so they would follow it to the barn. But that didn't work either. Nothing I did could get them to go into the barn where it was warm and safe. Feeling very frustrated, I yelled, "Why don't you follow me? Can't you see this is the only place where you can survive the storm?" Just then, my Uncle, who was watching from the house saw how mad I was getting and came out to assist me. Laughing He said; "You know, if you could become a goose you would be able to tell them, in their language, that you're not trying to hurt them, that you only want to show them the way, and that you only want to save them!" Well, I thought that my Uncle was just being silly at the time, but I now realize how true that it is, except apply it to the human world, and and how these Messengers come from a spiritual place to lead us on a path that is of benefit to us, not only on this physical plane. but in the worlds to come after we cast off this mortal coil. I didn't even finish the book when I asked my brother,"How does one become a Bahá'í, "What do I have to do"? "Just sign here", He says. [To enroll in the Baha'i Faith, one makes a declaration of faith in their belief that Baha'u'llah is the Manifestation of God for this day and age, and their recognition of the stations of the other Central Figures of the Faith. This is done by signing an enrollment card.] I end this essay with an excerpt from the voluminous scriptures of Bahá'u'lláh, Words such as these have been a great comfort to me when I look at the condition of the world and consider what a task it is that lies before us. "...Live then the days of thy life, that are less than a fleeting moment, with thy mind stainless, thy heart unsullied, thy thoughts pure, and thy nature sanctified, so that, free and content, thou mayest put away this mortal frame, and repair unto the mystic paradise and abide in the eternal kingdom forevermore." ~ Bahá'u'lláh
