Jay's Story
After a 33-year career in public education, I retired in 2001. My time as a public school educator included several years as a teacher and coach, 17 years as a high school principal and 7 as a superintendent. I especially enjoyed my principal years, possibly because it was where I felt most comfortable having spent so much of my time there as a high school student.
I then worked eight years as a writer for a newspaper in Central Kentucky where I won 14 Kentucky Press Awards for writing and/or photography.
I've led a very fortunate life to date, far better than I could have ever anticipated. Most of my education career was spent in Wyoming and Michigan. During my time as its principal, Jackson Hole High School earned distinction as a National Blue Ribbon School and I was recognized by President Reagan in the White House's Rose Garden.
As Grand Haven High School principal in Michigan, the cultural diversity program I designed was bestowed the Spirit of the Holiday Award by the Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation. At the time it was bestowed, Grand Haven High was the only high school to be so honored. I received the award in Washington D.C. from then-Attorney General Janet ...Expand for more
Reno.
In 1994, I was named Superintendent of the Thornapple Kellog School District in Michigan. During the years I served as its superintendent, Celebrate Reading, a program I created, was recognized by the State of Michigan as one of its most innovative new programs.
Now-a-days, I'm retired and spend most of my time reading, traveling, and enjoying the outdoors. During the past few years, I've backpacked about 1800 miles of the 2115-mile-long Appalachian Trail and also hiked extensively all over Europe. I've also rafted and/or kayaked many of America's western rivers including Hells Canyon of the Snake, the Salmon River and the Middle Fork of the Salmon in Idaho, and the majestic Grand Canyon of the Colorado.
I earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Georgetown College and an ED.S.in Education Degree from Indiana University.
I've saved the details of the best and most important part of my life for the last act of this narrative. I now reside in Lexington with Harriet, my wife of 55 years and counting. We met in Freshman English class at Georgetown College. We have two sons and a granddaughter, Anna, who lives just a few miles away and spends lots of time with us.
