Jay's Story

After high school I went to the University of Washington in Seattle Washington ( I seem to have a thing about Washington). There I started with a major in Architecture and end up in Social Psychology. Guess what I never did anything with either one. Also while at the UW I took up the hobby of Photography. After school I came back to Los Angeles and started driving a cab. After a two years of that I started working for an Alarm Company. For the next few years I moved from company to company learning all I could (getting a hefty pay raise which each switch). In 1978 I started my own Alarm Company and I also became a Professional Photographer as well. As a photographer I shot many Hair shows, Fashion shows, Weddings, Parties and special events. My Alarm Company did well. Fast forward 16 years. I get married to Alanda (a-land-da) Jackson who also went to Washington, class of 71. Yes, we went together in high school but we went our separate ways before I graduated. She went on to marry someone else later and, well, that didn't work out. I give up the photography three years after our marriage because my Alarm company was demanding so much of my time. Today Alanda and I are still together. She has become very successful in a 88 year old organization called Toastmasters International. They teach people how to overcome their fear of public speaking and also teach them to develop leadership skills. Alanda was the first Black person to become District Governor of Toastmasters Founder's District. She did this while carrying a full time job at Canon USA's west coast headquarters. Search "Alanda Dyer Toastmaster" to see my lovely wife. My company now works with Alarms, CCTV and Digital Video Recorders, Whole House Audio, Home Theater, Computer networking, Telephone, Intercom, Video, Satellite and Cable building distribution systems and Home Automation. We tie it all together. We can make your home/building act like its smarter than you are. I'm starting to get a little old for the work I do, so I have of late started to take up Photography again. This time I am not taking pictures of people, places and things. I have developed a new type of Abstract Art Photography I call Dyer-LightArt. It is a process where I DRAW with light inside my camera. I have never seen or found anyone else doing this type of imagery. I hope people like it. It looks like something someone used a computer to create and photographers I have shown my work to can't figure out how I do it all in one shot. If you would like to see a few examples of "JayDyer-LightArt" just type that into your search engine. I am not as of yet trying to sell any works, even though the sight you'll go to has prints for sale. It is just a convenient place to put a sampling for people to see. At this point I am more interested in what people think about it than I am in selling it. I have over a thousand different pieces, I will have plenty of time to sell a few when I retire. If you look at my work, please let me know what you think, good or bad. 2013, I just uploaded a ...Expand for more
few older examples of Dyer-Lightart to the photo section here. Most of these were shot between 2005 and 2009. Please comment. It may not seem like it from what I have wrote, but I am the quiet home body type and my wife is the social butterfly. I have strong opinions and love to debate, which I very rarely get a chance to do. Being a TV-aholic, I try to watch as little TV as I can. When I am alone it is almost never on. My wife is also a TV-aholic but she embraces it. So, we spend most of our time together guess where. I have one daughter and three grand children. My daughter is from before Alanda and I re-met. That is a whole other story I may share one day. Very few of you may remember me from high school because while I was everywhere I was also almost invisible. I got along with almost every female and very few males. During the whole of high school I had only three girl friends and I think there were only three maybe four males I could call friends. Yet, through it all I had a great time. Many of you would never go back to that time in your life. I enjoyed it. Never being apart of the IN crowd and yet never being a part of the social outcast is what I think made it fun for me. I had no pressure either way. I was in several clubs, held offices in a couple of them, lettered in track and even held class offices in sophomore and senor years. One last thing before I end this novel I seem to be writing. In my later years I developed a case of Vidiligo. You'll have to look it up. You might know it as the Micheal Jackson disease. Needless to say I don't do much socially. You might say I did not grow old gracefully. Like many of you, getting old is not much fun but keeping busy and being the best person I can be is helping to keep the time flying by. In fact it has been so fast, that I can hardly believe it has been over 40 years since leaving Washington. And with that I am going to say "Good night Gracey". It's been fun sharing a few tidbits of my life. As with many of you, this adventure we have lived can not be covered in a few lines on a page. Hopefully, in time we can get reacquainted. A favor I would ask of you; There are a few people in particular I would like to find out what happened to them. If any of you know them please let me know how they are or were. Beverly Blackshear: we were very close but never romantically involved. Larry ?: I will find and add his last name later. While in high school I introduced him to his future wife. The last I heard they had SEVEN children. He may or may not be happy with me for that one. He was best friends with Ronald and Donald Tyson. Donald past away a few years after high school. If anyone knows Ronald Tyson, Please put him in touch with me or let me know what happened to him. Vanessa Radcliff: I grew up living next door to her on Zamora. I heard her brother Eugene past away many years ago. That's it for now, I hope to rekindle a few old friendships and or make new friends of those of you I did not know well in the old days. Til next time. Take care. JD
