Jay Sheldon's Story
JMHS was a great experience for me and at that time I had many classmate friends. I was on the football team (B and Varsity) and B swim team. I, along with Randy Burg (now deceased) and Bob Waks had a folksong trio (the Terrymen) and participated in the noon hootenannys and assemblies. Sadly, upon graduation I lost contact with virtually all of my classmate friends as we all split to different colleges, universities, and careers. I commuted to Valley State College (which became CSUN by the time I got my first degree) and began working full time to pay for college expenses. So I moved out to the west San Fernando Valley and just lost touch. I got my BS-Finance in '69 and MS-Finance in '72.
Three weeks after the June graduation, I secured a job in the mail room of Liberty Savings in Beverly Hills and thus began a 47-year career in banking. In the LA area I worked for Liberty Savings, Home Savings, Coast Federal Savings, and eventually over 15 years at Security Pacific. Sec Pac merged with Bank of America in 1992 and my wife and I moved to the Midwest to continue my banking career. There I worked for KeyCorp in Cleveland, OH; Banc One Corp (now Chase Manhattan) in Columbus, OH and Chicago, IL; and completed my career at Huntington Bank in Columbus, OH. I retired to N. California in 2012. The career took me to many of the major financial centers of the world; London, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, the Hague, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Osaka; and all over the US.
I met my wife, Jeannette, at Liberty Savings (she was my boss) and we married in 1968. We had...Expand for more
three children, a daughter and twin boys by the end of 1971. All married and I now have 9 grand children. My children all stayed in California, which drove our decision to return here for retirement. One son we lost to cancer in 2009 and then Jeannette died unexpectedly in January 2014, We were married 45 years.
For hobbies I have always maintained my guitar playing and music interest. I purchased my first 6-string while at JMHS and was introduced to it by classmate David Brick for which I am deeply indebted. It was for an American history class that we prepared some early American folk songs. I subsequently traded that in and bought my first 12-string at a Santa Monica pawn shop. Today, I own/play 2 acoustic/electric 12-strings (Guilds), 3 acoustic/electric 6-strings (Taylor, Martin, Cordoba), I-electric (Fender Stratocastor), a 12-string Spanish mandolin (bandurra), bluegrass mandolin (learning), Andean churango (learning), and a banjo (also learning).
I recently got into hot rods and own a burgundy 1934 Ford 3-window. Boy, I would have loved to own that while at JMHS!! I know it would have made "Heap of the Week". I play golf occasionally and am actively involved in my church and the Gideons.
And I have to confess that looking back, the preparation days at JMHS built a solid foundation for which I am very grateful.
I hope to reconnect with some of you at the 50-year reunion, the first I can attend since I am back in California.
While my life, like everyone's, has it's ups and downs, looking back I have to say that life has been very good to me. I trust it has been so for you and yours.
