Jean's Story
Growing up as a teenager all I dreamed about was being a wife and mother. I had a perfect wedding dress pattern and wedding items saved in my Hope chest. I married my best friend, Ben Davis in 1982. He was my gift from God. We had 2 beautiful daughters. Sarah our oldest is married with one child, Gibson. Gibson was born 10/31/18. Melissa our youngest, has been a career student. At 30 she is finally graduating with her PhD. Melissa had been in Arizona since 2011. That trip to Arizona doesn't get any shorter! When Sarah went off to college in 2004, she encouraged me to go to college and get the degree I put off to have a family. It took me four years but I did it. I received my degree in accounting and business in 2008. My family was extremely proud of me. The saddest day off life was July 4, 2012. I lost my best friend to cancer after a 2 1/2 year courageous battle. We were married 30 years. Ben was a Charlotte police officer for more than 30 years. Life with a police officer definitely had its challenges. He worked the night shift for most of our marriage. It worked for us since I was a stay at home mom. God blessed us throughout our marriage with so many things seen and not seen. I've grown and learned so much since Ben passed away. The hardest thing I did was to relearn my identity not our identity. I think out of everything, this process has been the hardest. My girls have been encouraging and right by my side. blame someone or something for the death of your loved one but that didn't happen to me. I was so thankful for extra time Ben and I had together. Nothing can prepare you for their death, of that I am certain. You never get over it. You just move beyond it and do the best you can. I took me a year and a half to find work using my degree. The job I found was for an accountant's office. I loved the work but hated the abnormal hours of tax season. I stayed in the field for almost five years. My daughter Sarah who lived over 4 hours away wanted me to move closer to her. Knowing I would soon sell my home, I made the decision to move near her. I just needed confirmation from the Lord. I got that confirmation on her birthday when she announced they were pregnant. I couldn't have been happier to hear this news. Gibson was born a week after I moved into my new house. It was wonderful to be there for the birth. Moving to an area where I know only my daughter and her husband wasn't easy that's for sure. I think I've finally found a new church that I'm looking forward to getting more involved in. I continue the process of finding my identity. It's an ongoing project. The new normal for my life isn't much different than the old one. Family comes first no matter what. They are or what support, encouragement and advisor in this craziness we call life. My family and my God are the most important parts of my life. I can't imagine doing life without either one!
