Jean's Story

I lived most of my life in Beaumont, going to school at Voth Rosedale, then Austin Jr. High School, and, finally French High School, where my father, Leon Thompson, was the drafting/architecture teacher. We moved to Beaumont when I was about three years old, my parents having grown up in Denton, where they attended North Texas University. Besides the regular school program, I enjoyed band and math. Most of my free time, before and after school, as well as lunch, was spent practicing with the band. Seems that we were either practicing marches for football games or practicing music for concerts and competition. I also enjoyed taking drafting and architecture from my father. I had hopes of becoming an architect, but my father convinced me that this was a man's job, and that women needed to become teachers in order to be at home with their children. So, I spent most of my career in education. I moved away from Beaumont when I graduated from Lamar State College of Technology and got married in 1968. I moved back to Beaumont in the late 70's and moved away again in the late 80's. I moved back again and completed another degree in Psychology. Subsequently, I enjoyed working at Lamar University. Later, I moved to Houston, where one of my two sons lived; the other moved to Salt Lake City, UT. My son in Houston now lives about three blocks from me and has 2 daughters, with another due in April and my son in Salt Lake City has a son and a daughter. I am now retired and my father lives with me. Retirement has been a busy time, as we are rebuilding a beach house after the Ike storm. When we are ...Expand for more
not doing this, we spend time with family. I enjoy swimming, gardening, walking - when it is not hot! I can honestly say that my mother has always been my hero. She was beautiful and smart, as well as a caring and loving person. I love Masterpiece Theater and Masterpiece Mystery. I enjoy gardening shows, as well as Channel 8"s Create programing. My pets have always been Scottish Terriers, which I occasionally breed to sell. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel outdoors and add on a living area outdoors. My dream home would be a covered pool. I joined a sorority at Lamar and also lived in the dorm. I liked the freedom gained by living on campus. I could walk to classes and go to the library without driving anywhere. This was fun because I grew up in a rural setting. When I taught at Westbrook High School in Beaumont, I earned an award from the Student Council. My first job was at Galveston ISD, where I got paid $300 to $400. What I remember most about it is that some of the students were very mean spirited. Because both my parents were school teachers with the summers off, we spent most of that time traveling the United States camping. I will never forget those experiences living under the stars in unfamiliar places. I always wanted to be a architect when I grew up. My family thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were right. I feel that my career in education has given me the opportunity to touch the lives of many children and enable them to be able to achieve their dreams. This, as a consequence, enabled me to be more like my mother, who was also a teacher, and my hero.
