Jeanine's Story
Life
Moved from Santa Barbara, CA to Tucson, AZ just before my senior year in H.S. Thought I would hate it, but ended up having a great senior year. Went to the University of Arizona for undergrad (French major, Poli Sci minor). Had twin girls (now sophomores in college) and a boy (now a senior in high school). Stayed at home with the kids for a couple of years. Began teaching French and Spanish at a high school in Tucson. Got divorced just a couple years later. After 8 years of teaching, quit to go back to grad school at the University of Arizona. Got an MA in Early European History, and went on to the Ph.D. program. Worked as a T.A. at the university while a grad student. Met my husband (also a grad student in European history). We were married in 2002. He finished his Ph.D. that year and took a teaching position in Irvine (Orange County), CA, so we moved. I got a Fulbright to do some research in France, and left my husband (a real saint!) with the kids (teenagers by then) for three months. They all joined me that summer, and we h...Expand for more
ad a wonderful time living in Paris and traveling in the provinces. Returned to the OC and started writing the dissertation. It remains half finished because I've had to go back to work to put kids through college. Worked for awhile as a business systems analyst, but left the corporate rat race to work as a database administrator for a non-profit. My husband recently accepted a position at the University of Missouri, Rolla, so we're buying a house there and moving in summer 2007. My daughters are now math and organic chemistry majors (certainly not interests inherited from me!), planning to get an MBA and an MD respectively. My son will start college at Northern Arizona University in the fall. He's majoring in anthropology-- a chip off the ol' block! Hoping to find time someday to finish my dissertation and get that Ph.D.-- finally! In the meantime, I look forward to leaving behind the traffic, smog, and conspicuous consumption of southern California, settling in a small town, and accompanying my husband on research trips to Europe.
