Jeanna's Story
Life
My life has taken some drastic turns in the last few years. I was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer back in 2003. After radiation, scar tissue built up in my airway forcing me to undergo an emergency tracheostomy. I had worked in a legal department for nine years, but after losing my voice, I had to finally accept disability after two years of fighting to retain my career. Like I said, drastic changes!!
I hate to sound like one of those "life reaffirming" prophets, but that's pretty close to what happened. I threw myself a little pity party for about five minutes and then sucked it up. Since then, I have turned things around about myself. I no longer think that I had it all figured out. (Although I was pretty close! ha)
Now I get to spend unlimited time with my two girls, which has made a definite impact. My daughters are 12 and 9 (both going on sixteen!) These days life is filled with cheer practice, orthodontists, loud music, skating rinks, homework, and sleep-overs every weekend. My twelve year old is blonde, looks nothing like me, is a self professed "tomboy-punk" who's into every gaming device, lives...Expand for more
in camo, and worships Green Day. My nine year old is a "girly-girl" who would live in the mall if I allowed it, is addicted to pop music, boys, and VH-1.
In addition to my 2 girls, most days my house is also filled with all of their friends, as well as my 2 nephews, and 2 surrogate children who think they live here, as well, who are five and three. My life is kids! And with all these kids comes the pets: cats, fish, turtles, lizards, and a fox squirrel that we rescued from the cats!
I still write in what little free time I get. I am proud to say that my elder daughter inherited my talent for prose and won a poetry contest at her school recently. I still write when I am moved or inspired. I am still awaiting the inspiration for my book! (ha!)
I still do notary work and hope to regain all of my voice so that I can go back to work someday. I've had several operations to retain my airway usage, to some success, but I still lose my voice fairly often. But it hasnt stopped me from living life. And I'm still me! It's been fun being with with my girls. I'd love to reminesce with old friends if anyone is interested!
