Jeanne's Story
After an inglorious high school experience, I spent a couple of years trying to figure out what to do with myself. After two years at Foothill College, I decided I wasn't ready for higher education and got a job at Hewlett-Packard, where I started out in the mailroom in Palo Alto and worked my way up to receptionist at the Cupertino division. I was 21 before I moved away from home and into an apartment with three girls I hardly knew, but it turned out to be a great experience. I finally had a social life! I enjoyed the 70's by quitting my job at HP and becoming a free spirit for two or three years, ending after an exhausting 3-month trek to Mexico in a Dodge van with a case of dysentery. to get serious. I started working at the school district in East Palo Alto as a secretary and then took a job at an electrical contracting company, where I was making tons of money before they were audited and went out of business. I was set up on a blind date with a very nice, grounded guy from Iowa, named Ed, who luckily saw my inner, as well as outer beauty, and we married in 1977. We have one son, Eric, who's a creative writer and just graduated from law school in New York City. I gave up my career as a working woman when Eric was born and went back to school to get a degree in fine art. Now I'm making silver jewelry at a studio in Palo Alto and happily living in Los Altos. So, after a bumpy start, everything turned out fine.
