Jeff's Story
After being in business for about 22 years, I returned to college to finish my BA in Mathematical Disciplines. (Math!? Yep. I really disliked math in High School, but I began to find it fun, and developed a passion for it while attending Junior College!). I thought that perhaps I'd make a good teacher because of my new-found attitude toward math. Besides, it didn't hurt knowing more about it, being in business, and having the acumen for architecture - which was my 1st major.
But, immediately after graduating from NVC, I was driven to get into business, and blended what I loved (music), with business. I just dove in, with no conception of failure. I asked my brother to be my partner, and the store just kept on growing. After buying John out in '84, and surviving a couple of recessions, I thought I'd look for new challenges. So, I got back into college, took some advanced courses and transferred to UC Davis. I took a few classes each quarter, and learned a bit more about Math, number theory, and crazy stuff like that. But most of what I use now is related to algebraic functions and statistical analysis, trend theory, etc.
I commuted about 3 times a week from Napa - usually in the morning - and returned by mid-morning to work a full 10-12 hour day in my business, get home to do homework until I dropped. Eventually, as we were e...Expand for more
xpecting our 2nd child (I am still married to my first - and only wife), I had to abandon or postpone the pursuit, and deal with life. I'm now just shy the degree by a handful of classes..
I don't regret making that decision.
By '99, financial concerns (and benefits being more than motivational) I began to seek new career opportunities - get a REAL job - and work for someone else!
I 'temped' for awhile, with an eye toward the wine business (in Napa Valley, that's not too far of a stretch!). I temped for over a year at a medium - sized winery, working in their sales department. I also did some accounting for a research lab. While doing this, a guy in my Bible Study asked if I was any good at sales...which turned out to be a 3+ year stint with Verio/NTT. I moved up the ladder fairly quickly, and became their National Sales Analyst, and did that for almost 2 years. But then came the end of the 'dot-com' era, and I was summarily laid-off (along with my entire department)! U did get an offer to taje a position in Boca Raton, but...I didn't want to move.
Less than a month after that, I was contacted for an accounting gig with an independent wine laboratory in St. Helena, and have enjoyed the beautiful commute, the working environment for the past 5 years +! I'm still playing guitar. and have a band - write me to find out more...
