Jeff's Story

School Right now I'm taking two college courses--yoga and child development, evenings, at the local community college. This is the third child development course I've taken since my babies were born last year. Last semester I took a course with babies and their mothers, mostly. I like the ratio in these courses. At Chico State I majored in political science with a pre-law emphasis, and for the life experience interned with Environmental Advocates and the County Jail Law Project. I also attmepted an undergraduate technical writing certificate program at CSU Chico; I say attempted because I still have some "UI" grades }:O In the Califonia Army National Guard I went to a two week basic course for combat engineers in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, and officer candidate school just outside of Sturgis, South Dakota, near Mt. Rushmore, and at San Luis Obispo, CA. In the Marines I went to nco school at Camp Pendelton, CA, electronics school in Twenty-Nine Palms, CA, and basic training at MCRD San Diego. I did all of my active duty training in California. Prior to the military and just after h.s. I went to Universal Technical Institute in Phoenix, AZ for A/C, refrigeration, heating, and solar energy. I went to West Valley H.S. and Anderson H.S. my freshman year before West Valley opened. I did elementary school at Happy Valley School, 6th through 8th grade and North Valley Baptist Christian school for 4th and 5th grade, and preschool through 2nd grade at Long Beach Brethren Christian school and 3rd grade at Paramount Brethren Christian school in South Central L.A. Workplace Currently, I am getting into photography and have my eye on photography school. Before I got out the California Army Nationa...Expand for more
l Guard I was in a broadcast media unit which I very much enjoyed out of all the military occupations I have held, including communications electronics technician, combat engineer, and officer candidate school (I didn't hang myself from a shower fixture, but I did DOR) It wasn't too physically challenging or academically difficult, I just didn't like a lot of the mentality. In the mid 80s, after H.S. and trade school, during the tax breaks for using solar energy, I installed a lot of solar collectors and hot water heaters on roof tops in the greater Phoenix area. I've also done air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and major appliance repair work.... Military I started out at MCRD San Diego, as do all Marines west of the Mississippi and was assigned to 3rd Battalion, India Company, with Senior D.I. Gunnery Sergeant Smith, SSGT Bonilla, SSGT Escobido, and SGT Clancy (sorry about the abreviations, guys, LOL). I can laugh about it now. Then I went on to Twenty-Nine Palms for communications electronics school and was assigned to ELMACO, Ist Maint. Bn. at Camp Pendelton in North County, San Diego for a long, long time, broken only by a year or so at Base Communications working for Gunnery Sergeant Turner and Captain Brown. I love you guys, man. Highlights to my time in service include knocking the platoon "stick carrier" into the water in bootcamp during bridge-over-troubled-water, and smoking the company commander at ELMACO, Major Jamison, on the three-mile run during the semi-annual PFT. And Major Crabill--my best to you, and to Ron Sablan, Steve Stinson, Richard Guerra, Craig Spooner, Ken Zollar, Robert Moss, Otis Clary, James Harley, and Paul Kangas, et. al. To all the rest...kiss my ass!
