Jeff's Story

I'm not a member here so I can't see Guestbook names or other messages. I run an organization called The Firearms Coalition in Manassas, Virginia and write for a couple of gun publications. I'm very easy to find on the internet so please get in touch. After HS I went into the Army - Signal Intelligence in Berlin - for 3 1/2 years then did a year as the Tech Director of the Army Community Theater in Augsburg, Germany. Back to the states and to Prescott not long after that. My family had moved to the DC area where Dad was the head of the NRA's lobbying arm. I went to Yavapai for a year and then headed back East for a better job. Ended up going to a little island way off the coast of Alaska for a year as a communications contractor on a remote Air Force base: Shemya Island, Alaska - 2. something by 4. something miles of black, volcanic rock and tundra. Wind blew constantly, sometimes over 100 mph, but room and board was provided and I was making over a thousand bucks a week. I think I was on leave from that job or had just left it when I went to the 10 year reunion. Back to the lower 48 and into computer programming and systems management for a Virginia consulting firm. Did that for a number of years, but family called me back to Prescott and I answered the call. Worked briefly for Ruger where I met my wife, then began building, selling and repairing computers. Somehow that led to a fill-in gig with KIHX radio in PV and that led to a regular talk show on KPPV when that station was launched. I caught a lucky break and landed a job as General Manager of a small AM in Spokane, Washington. It was a great gig even though it was 60+ hours a week. After seven years of that I was a bit burned out and was ready for a change. I was very politically aware and involved and answered a challenge to run for the State House. Really enjoyed the campaign and did better than any Republican has done in that district in decades, but unfortunately that wasn't good ...Expand for more
enough to win the race. After an interim job with an internet start-up, my Dad convinced me to come back out to Virginia to help him with his business and begin the process of positioning me to take over sometime in the future. Dad wanted to write some books, get back to shooting more and writing about the technical side of guns as he had done when he was Editor and Publisher of "Rifle" and "Handloader" magazines at Wolfe Publishing in Prescott. I was here to relieve him of some of the day-to-day research and writing tasks to give him more time for those other pursuits. Not long after I got here though, he was diagnosed with cancer and 10 months later he passed away. We were all devastated. His father died in October at age 93 and then Dad went 3 months later at age 69. Since Mom was dependent on the business she and Dad had run for 20 years, we decided to keep it going and our clients and supporters have been great about letting me take over operations. Running the lobbying/consulting business and our organization, The Firearms Coalition, is like a culmination of all of my life's training and interests. I love it and am passionate about the subject of firearm owners' rights. Last year I was awarded "Grass Roots Activist of the Year" by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and I also had my first non-political article published in a national gun magazine; a training piece for "Handguns." On September 19th, 2006 (International Talk Like a Pirate Day) we were blessed with the most wonderful grandson ever. His name is Tyree, Ty for short, and his favorite thing to do is hang out with his PaPaa driving the tractors and the Gator, seeing the cows, and picking and eating "ba-bees" (black berries.) We have a grand time together and I can't wait to start teaching him how to shoot. Two is the right age to start him on the .45 don't you think? I'd love to hear from you. If you want, you can always find me at The Firearms Coalition.
