Jeff's Story

2018! Really???!!! I really can't believe next year will be our 40 year reunion! Wow! I also can't believe it's only been ten years since our 30th reunion. So much has happened in my life during those ten long years. My dad entered heaven, which was one of the most difficult things I've had to face so far in life. My 28-year marriage ended in divorce in 2012 (okay, maybe this was the toughest thing I've ever encountered) and I was laid off from my 20+ year job with the phone company and couldn't find a job in Denver doing the same thing I had been doing at a similar salary level. The job offers were not piling in and life looked pretty bleak, but God wasn't finished with me... I had been teaching masters level GIS courses at DU as an adjunct professor since 1996 and decided this was what I wanted to do (teach) so I pursued getting a Ph.D. -- yes, I laughed my butt off as well at this most unlikely turn of events! :-) At first I was looking to get a Ph.D. in Geography from DU, but couldn't find an advisor who was comfortable with my more business-related geography focus. Long story short, I met a very kind DU professor who invested in me and got me to apply to five different schools for a Ph.D. in Hospitality. I ended up in Columbia, SC and completed my doctorate in 2017 -- yes, I am now a doctor!!! (and no one is laughing louder or harder than me! -- I never ever in my wildest dreams thought that would happen!!!) :-) I landed my first teaching gig in New Britain, Connecticut as the Director of Tourism & Hospitality Studies as an Assistant Professor in the fall of 2017, and am having fun exploring the New England states -- which were always a mystery to me as a Colorado boy... I'm exploring my New England backyard at every chance and almost fit in here, but I don't think I'll ever feel like an 'easterner' -- I'm just too much of a Colorado boy! Three of my four kids are still in Denver, as is my mom and my brother and sister, so I still frequent Denver twice a year or so. So, I guess I'm still trying to find myself, but I feel like I'm closer than I've ever been. The last ten years have been perhaps the most difficult decade of my life, but because of some phenomenal people God put into my path, I feel like a phoenix emerging from the ashes... This professor gig is a pretty sweet deal. I wish I had pursued it years earlier, but that never would have been possible with providing for the family and all... ...Expand for more
All in all, I'm very content with life and as long as I don't lose my marbles, I should have a job for the rest of my life... I look forward to chatting with my friends of 40-plus years to hear your stories and hear what direction your lives have taken you... Jeff Okay, everything below this line is from the 30th year reunion!..................................................................... I can't believe it's been 30 years. It totally doesn't seem real. I married my college sweetheart and we've been married for 25 years in January (2009). I have four kids 20, 18, 16, and 14 -- all of whom I love greatly and think the world of. You see those movies where teenagers resemble creatures from some lagoon, but I can honestly say I enjoy spending time with each of my kids! A far cry from the hormone crazed teenager of the seventies, I'm now a family man close to the final lap of sending my kids off into this world -- in a strange "circle of life" dance... It's time for them to carry on the hopes and dreams of youth... I like to write and sing and act and be creative in many ways, but over the last 30 years haven't been able to make a living at any of this fun stuff! So I work as a computer geek in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Qwest in Denver. I teach G.I.S. part time at DU (University College) to keep my skills fresh -- and to be able to perform in front of a paying "audience"!!! :-) I enjoyed seeing so many folks at the 10 year reunion, but I missed the 20 year. I'm looking forward to catching up and hearing about what mark each of you has made on the world and/or what marks the world has imposed on you... Each mark signifies growth and lessons learned -- or not... When I think back on my high school days I feel I owe everyone I knew an apology because I still don't know as much now as I thought I did then... I've sometimes thought it would be fun to go back to high school now with the knowledge I have now -- but then again, I think I'm okay at this stage of life without reliving that strange chapter of life! Anyway, I hope I get to spend time with all of you whom I spent those youthful years with: in Meistersingers, Theatre, choir, marching band, and other miscellaneous classes and other events. In any case, I hope the past 30 years has been beneficial and that you've grown through every mountain and valley. Additionally I wish you all the best life has to offer...
