Jeff's Story

Life Currently I am about to start my second year of graduate school in the Statistics and Probability Department at Oregon State University. My wonderful girlfriend of two years Mari, pronounced "maree" not "mary", and I live in Corvallis, OR. In the event I do not hit the lottery within the next four years, I will have received my PhD in Statistics with a Master's degree in Mathematics from OSU. Actually whether I hit the lottery or not this will still be the case as I do not believe in starting something with out finishing it. From there it is off to academia or more than likely off to work in the field of Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Sciences for awhile. Hopefully 4 years from now I will be working at a hedge fund as a quantitative analyst. College The main reason I went to CSU Chico is because at the time I had a very serious girlfriend who was going there while I was at home working and I couldn't stand to be without her anymore. Our relationship lasted a couple of years upon my arrival in the Fall 1999 semester. After we split I became very serious about riding bulls and began to travel the country. I still went to college, when I was there, and managed to get very good grades besides having one of the lowest attendance records possible. I kept doing this for the next couple of years until during the summer of 2003 my left, riding hand, wrist was badly injured and I was forced out of competition. At the time I didn't know if I would ever be able to compete again, so I thought I would make the best of the situation by taking advantage of the fact that for the last year of my undergraduate studies in economics I would actually be in class on a consistent basis and decided to beef up my course schedule. The last year of my studies in economics was the hardest simply due to the fact that I forced myself to take the most rigorous schedule I could develop. But in the end it damn sure paid off. I think I learned as much in that last year as I did in the previous four years combined. During my last year I also decided to join a fraternity. I had always been interested in them but never really had the chance to make the time commitment they require. So I joined the Theta Chi chapter at CSU Chico, and I have no regrets. It was one of the funnest years of my life. Chico is a party school and Theta Chi is the head party fraternity on campus. I made some really good friends which I still hang out with today and like I said I have no regrets about my decision. Although I don't know if I could have done it fo...Expand for more
r 5 years, simply due to the fact of how much late night partying and drinking I would have gone through. I think one year was enough. As for now my college involvement will be done on a purely academic basis. I am eager to complete my second bachelors in applied math and begin my doctorate studies. And by the way my wrist healed up in about 6 months time and I began competing again. Workplace During my time at CSU Chico I never really worked because I was able to support myself from my the money I won riding bulls. I did however work during my last two years as an assistant for one of my economics professors. I also worked in construction during a couple of summers, first for Independent Construction Co. and then Mountain Cascade Inc., who if anyone reads this after today (12-1-2004) has probably seen their name (Mountain Cascade) all over the news for the recent pipeline explosion in Walnut Creek which killed 5 people. Jay Silva has worked for them for about 3 years now and secured a job with them for myself. Since the completion of my economics degree in May of 2004 I went back to work for them for 5 months. Now I have just passed my state insurance licensing exam and am a licensed life and health agent. I do not plan on making a career out of it but believe it is a very good job for someone who is going to school part time due to its flexible nature and potentially very large pay. So at the moment my plan is to work in insurance sales until I complete my doctorate. In between now and then I also plan on earning my Series 6 and 63 licenses so I can execute trades in the securities markets. I'm not really interested in trading for other people rather only myself. Due to the high volume of trading I do and the commissions I pay I believe I will be saving myself a pile of money in the long run by achieving licensed status and executing my own trades. I also want to receive my life insurance analyst license so I can perform consulting services for individuals and large groups. I have also recently undertaken the study of wealth creation and preservation. My father has been studying this topic for quite some time and together we occasionally attend conferences and seminars in the Bay Area. So as anyone can see I have been very busy recently and will continue to be for quite some time. I believe life is short and their is nothing worse than being forced into a job that you do not want to have but must keep simply because you need the money. I would rather live life on my terms and do something I absolutely enjoy.
