Jeff's Story

Life I always tell people that there were three kinds of groups at my high school: you either surfed, got loaded or surfed AND got loaded. I know that's not exactly true, but it seemed that way to me at the time. If you knew me then, you know which group I was in. I had a lot of good times. After I graduated from Western I went to UC Irvine as a BioSci major with the plan to go to medical school. I hated Irvine and dropped out after two years. After that I worked as a goldsmith for a couple of years with Mike Shierant from the class of '76. Later I was a probation officer. If you've ever wondered whether your juvenile criminal record can be sealed as an adult, I'm here to tell you that it can. Can you imagine me as a probation officer? I later worked in chemical engineering at Fluor Corp. By that time I was married to Laura. A lot of times I think it's funny that we met and got married (going on 23 years) because we were so different. But I guess opposites really do attract, and I credit her with helping me straighten out my life and get some focus. Several years later I went back to college at Cal State Long Beach and graduated with a degree in Chemistry. I also applied to a bunch of medical schools and got into UC Davis in 1984. I did four years there and graduated in 1988 with an M.D. From there I did two years of general surgery and then subspecialized in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery...Expand for more
for four more years. It took a while, but I'm in practice now in L.A. My daughter, Sarah, was born before I started med school. She's a sophmore in college as of this writing (11/02). My son, Sean, was born in my second year of residency. He's 13 now and thinks of nothing but Go-peds and basketball. Life plays out day by day and is basically good. I got into weight training about eight years ago, and that got me into running. From there I got the idea that I wanted to do a triathlon, and I've been doing that for the last five or so years. I've done mostly sprint and Olympic distance races and have made the winner's podium a few times with some second and third place finishes. I've also done half-Ironman distance races and just signed up for my first Ironman distance race, which will be Ironman USA in June 2003. So if my body doesn't fail me I'll be swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and then running a marathon (26.2 miles). I hope to do it in under 12 hours but my big goal is just to finish. The people who I hung out with: Steve Turner, Paul Pockels, Mike Shierant, Mike Vigil, Perry Nestel, Mike Pushnik, Steve Kennemer, Stan Russell, Jim Smathers, Brian Amacher, Chris Burton Hope to see everyone at the 30 year reunion. UPDATE: Did the Ironman and finished even though it 95 degrees. Whew. Went to the 30-year reunion last weekend and had a good time. It was great to see everyone.
