Jeff's Story
Life
After I left Sioux City in August 1981, I attended the U of Iowa. I obtained my bachelor's degree in Spanish (Geography minor) in 1985. I had a great undergraduate experience living in the Westlawn Foreign Language House (now defunct) on the Iowa campus. Because of a tight job market in the mid 1980s, I went back to graduate school to obtain a master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Iowa in 1987. I came very close to joining the Peace Corps and attending grad school elsewhere (Ohio State), but I'm glad I stayed in Iowa City, because I met my wife to be at a party there in late January of 1986. I interned at SIMPCO in the summer of 1986, and I really enjoyed that experience.
I started work at a regional planning commission based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in July of 1987, and I have never left. Northeast Wisconsin is an awesome place to live and work, although I will admit the winters get long. With Lake Michigan, the Bay of Green Bay, inland lakes and lots of woods (at least compared to Sioux City), the recreational opportunities are endless here, and the summers don't get as hot as they do in Sioux City.
My wife is originally from Chile (good use of a Spanish major - LOL), and she teaches in our public school district here. I've been to Chile 4X, and managed to get to Argentina one of those times. We have also traveled to Mexico and to Puerto Rico. Chile is a fabulous country to visit - you can visit the mountains and the ocean on the same day, and the people are friendly and have a great sense of humor.

Look us up if you ever pass through the Green Bay area, either as a destination or on the way to Door County.
School
I have a lot of teachers to thank from my years at East.
Probably most of all, Mrs. Deck, who taught me nearly everything I know today about composition. If she is still living, I'd tell her that I'm the "unofficial" editor of practically every document produced in our office. Mrs. Johnson was also great in the area of literature.
Spanish was a blast with Mrs. Donaway - I'm really glad that I went to Mexico in 1980.
The math faculty was great - especially Mr. Dirks.
A lot of the social studies was snooze time, but I loved Mr. Guhin's dry humor, and Mr. Barnum was a riot.
I didn't take too much science at East - Marv Smith spooked me from science my sophomore year. In retrospect, I wish I took chemistry and possibly physics, at least with other teachers.
College
The University of Iowa was very good to me. I lived in a foreign language dorm all 4 undergrad years. I had many wonderful professors, in general education requirements, undergrad majors, and in graduate school. I met people from all walks of life and from every continent except Antarctica. It was frightening going to such a big campus at first, but I matured so much intellectually from the experience.
Workplace
Let's just say that I've come a long way from the sweaty bus at 6:30 am in July taking us to a corn field down by Blencoe to detassel corn :)
