Jeff's Story
Life
My family moved east to Pittsburgh in the summer following my Junior year, and I stayed to attend college at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) in the School of Architecture. I practised Architecture in Pittsburgh until 1994, when I packed up & moved to Bainbridge Island WA, just across Puget Sound from Seattle.
I was heavily involved with a number of prominent projects in Pittsburgh, including the WQED TV studios, where Mr. Rogers was produced. Yes, I knew Mr. Rogers, & he was just like his TV persona. I was also project architect for the renovation of the Pittsburgh airport in the early 1970s & a large number of residential and commercial projects. I went to work with the Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority in 1978, where was involved with major housing programs, historic preservation and the building of Phillip Johnson's PPG headquarters. In 1989, I returned to Carnegie Mellon as Senior Project Architect involved with a major campus expansion. During these times, I was also maintaining a small practice doing housing & commercial projects. When we moved west in 1994, I was in my 50's & found little interest in my skills. I concentrated on my writing (I have published 4 books), started a design/build firm producing log homes and purchased a pizza restaurant. I am now retired, but driving a paratransit taxi 2 days a week in what amounts to "Hooterville", & continuing to write.
Outside of work, I became involved with the showing and breeding of Bulldogs, did a lot of back packing and canoeing in West Virginia and Ontario. This led to a renewed interest in railroads, since many of the trails were old logging railroad grades. I began model building & model railroading, which led to Life Membership in the National Model Railroad Association & earned the award Master Model Railroader (#97) in 1982. I served as an NMRA officer for many years, retiring from the National Board of Directors as Executive VP in 1993. That railroad interest l...Expand for more
ed to writing for the hobby magazines and then to books, all under the name CJ Riley. The book titles are "The Encyclopedia of Trains & Locomotives", "The Golden age of Passenger Trains", "Along the Rails" and "The Art of
Illusion". I am currently wrapping up a book on streamlined steam locomotives and gathering information on a couple of others.
In college, I learned to play the bagpipes as a member of the Tech Kilty Band & was a founder, with other alums, of the Macdonald Pipe Band, where I served as piper and then Drum Major for almost 35 years. We appeared at events all over the east, from Alma MI to Ligonier PA, Dover DE, Grandfather Mtn NC & Stone Mtn GA, among others. I was involved with recording 2 albums, one with Carnegie Tech, the other with Macdonald.
Along the way I married & divorced twice, then at the ripe age of 35 I met the wonderful & tolerant Denise . We have 2 terrific sons, Kegan and Morgan, both attending college (yes, I became a father at 39). We are currently looking for a plot of ground on which to build my final house (out of Sing Logs, an engineered environmentally sound product (check out singhome.com). I intend to continue writing & have numerous projects floating around in my head. I am also busy restoring and customizing my 1979 Ford pickup.
Little did I realize when I was puttering around San Carlos in my Model A roadster (as old then as my pickup is today), wearing my "Frantics of Belmont" hot rod club jacket & being a rather geeky and anonymous member of Carlmont's class of '60, where this wonderful life would lead. I certainly didn't envision spending most of my adult life in the east, nor did I expect to become a writer ( I did decide to become an architect in Mr Jensen's drafting class), but it has been a very enjoyable adventure. I missed the 40th reunion, even though I was in San Jose at the time, but I look forward to a future gathering, even though the people I hung with are probably the least likely to attend.
