Jeff's Story

Still shredding the axe whenever I can and still play out from time to time just for fun. About 15 years ago I realized making it big in the music industry just wasn't in the cards and so I took a few years off in California and pretty much did everything there is to do in Cal. ( scuba diving, hunting, climbing, surfing, boating, bought a condo anyway you get the picture.) I basically was struggling with a career decision at that time. I love playing guitar on stage with the guys but I had not been achieving my financial goals as I had envisioned in my early years (a little more high end). When I first came to Texas 30 years ago I sold working interests in oil drilling projects (Reg. D offerings) as a part time job between gigs and college. I didn't know what the hell I was doing but I could sell and the commissions were huge (no salary just straight commission). 1 sale and I was set for 3 or 4 months cash wise. Not bad. Anyway fast forward... One day I picked up the paper and saw an ad for registered brokers for an oil industry investment firm. I said "that's it, you can do this". Ha... was I in for a big surprise. I didn't know diddly squat. Let me tell you the broker exam (commodities and state tax law exam)is one of the hardest exams out there. It took me a year and scrapping by for the first time in a long time before I passed the series 22, 63 and 39 exams. Of course my friends thought I was crazy leaving the music business, and some of them are still shaking their heads in disbelief. Well 8 years later it was all worth it. I work a lot of hours but in style and am considered a knowledgeable professional in the oil industry. In my closing, what I knew and lived... Always believe in yourself even if no one else does and never, ever give up. Its okay to have your head up in the clouds as long as you have at least one toe on the ground (as my father used to say). In other words, go after your dreams, but know your limits and be realistic and with that you have half a chance. That's just the way life is. Work like a dog and every once in awhile life will throw you a bone... Oh yeah one more thing going back to my younger days. For those of you that believed in me, Tha...Expand for more
nk you. It means a lot to me because there sure were a lot of people out there that didn't. I always wanted to be a rock star when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a 1 in a million idea. As it turns out, they were right. To relax.... I hit the Tamara Judo Institute and then my jacuzzi every other day. If I'm going to work at my office, I need to have a good nights sleep, some imported coffee in the morning, and a positive attitude to be able to deal with the day-to-day commodities market. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Kevin Duarte, because he was my best friend. I love hockey and the Dallas Stars being from Canada and all. Second of course the Toronto Maple Leafs from my home town. I own 4 dogs. 2 Bull Terrier Danes (huge) and 2 Aussie Shepherds. My obsession is playing heavy metal guitar, harmonica and flugelhorn. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my second floor and add on a recording studio in the garage. My dream home would be underground. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to my best friends, then spend the rest on retirement, a new home, a 2009 Maserati and a very, very young imported bride if my girlfriend doesn't marry me. My current age is 52. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be much smarter. I was so completely wrong. My career aspirations so far are on target. My future goals are to complete my international law degree and try to get this world back on track. My best friend would tell you I'm sincere, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as aloof. I share my home with my beautiful girlfriend Lana and 4 bad ass dogs, which I find comfortably satisfying and secure. In 10 years, I hope to be living in Costa Rico with my friends. I'm going to get there by hell or high water. My first job was at the docks, where I got paid union wages to unload fishing boats. What I remember most about it is working with the meanest people around that couldn't get a regular job because most were felons and from that I got a strong back shoulders & forearms and a yearning desire to leave New Bedford, go back to school, and get a degree. Mission Accomplished.
