Jeffrey's Story
Life
I graduated in 1974 from Bloomington North High School. I have been an independent insurance agent since April, 1982. I was also a pastor of a Christian Church in Bloomington (IN). My wife, Joani and I take short term misson trips. She is a Registered Nurse working at Bloomington Hospital ER. She graduated from Munster High School in 1974. I took EMT training to be a better medical missionary though never used it as a job.
We have done a series of mission trips in Ivory Coast, W. Africa, Kenya, E. Africa, Mexico, Philippines and a few other places, including going to Banda Aceh Indonesia right after the tsunami. We take medical supplies into the bush and do treatments and teaching, in addition to setting up churches and doing leadership training. We have gone down into Tanzania and worked on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The Masaai are a very interesting culture. If you see the movie "Ghosts in the Darkness" with Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas, you will see exactly where we go and with whom we work. We cross the train track that is highlighted in the movie all the time.
I have been a wrestling coach at Bl. North for 8 years but am taking a leave from that. It's in great hands and I really don't have the time now.
I have a daughter who graduated from IU. She is married to an awesome guy and they are having a wonderful life in Ann Arbor.
School
High School. Great times, confusing times. We started at Bloomington High School and attended our sophomore year. North was finished that summer between 10th and 11th grade and I was in North district so I ended up there. We had the University School folks come in and that was quite a culture shock from our very traditional background at BHS which was then called South. University was a kind of experiment with openness and less structure. Sort of a creative arts atmosphere.
Wrestling was what I did. No other sports interested me. School in general didn't interest me although I somehow managed a little over a 3 point. Miracles do happen!
Friends were probably the most important thing to me. Especially after we switched schools. It was quite a melting pot at North! I think it was a really good "life's education." I am still really close to quite a few from those days.
Do I have high school regrets? Absolutely. But we can't dwell on our mistakes, only learn from them, grow and maybe in doing so, pass on a little wisdom to the next group going through.
The 70's were an awesome time to go through high school. Tie-dye, bell bottoms, and some of the greatest music ever written. We were free spirited and experimented with things I wouldn't want my daughter to, but I remember us being pretty responsible over all. I mean, I NEVER missed work or did a poor days work because of staying out too late or anything. To just not show up was NOT an option as it seems to be for some these days. O...Expand for more
ur worst vandalism was stealing pumpkins at Halloween and breaking them on someones' porch, or soaping or egging. Actually egging was pretty nasty and though I was around it some, I'm not sure I ever actually launched an egg.
Over all, we were pretty respectful. If an adult asked me a question I answered them. I used please, thank you, sir and ma'am and most of those I ran around with did too. In fact I still do to this day and GREATLY appreciate any young people who do too. Especially if he is wanting to date my daughter!
I got an 8 mm movie projector on ebay. I had lots of home movie footage from the early days that I had not even seen! It's great. I have some good blackmail stuff for a few folks that I look forward to showing them! hee hee hee! Actually, updating this now a couple of years later, I burn or have burned my home movies onto DVD. I wish I had taken 20 times more of them in those days.
I'm saddened when I hear people say they left High School behind and never looked back. I look back on those days with great fondness. I dream I'm there sometimes and it's usually a good dream, unless I'm undressed in class and just figured it out or can't find a class when I know I'm late for a test!
Reunions? Wouldn't miss one for the world. I wish everyone felt that way.
College
I went to college for wrestling and girls. Oh how I wish I had been a little more goal oriented! But all my experiences added to who I am today. I have been among other things, a pastor and I can relate to folks on a variety of levels because of some of the roads I have walked. I have done a lot of work with at rick teens and can pretty much speak their language due to my past. My college days included a lot of stress and there are times I wish I had not gone the paths I did, but at the same time, friends are very important to me and I have some great ones from those days. So for them alone, all the turmoil was worth it!! The older I get though, the less turmoil I remember and I look back and just have to smile. I think about those times so often. How did we ever live through them? But then again, some good people didn't.
Workplace
My career path is an insurance agent. I have been doing that since 1982 and it's been really good to me. I have total freedom to come and go as I please without having to get anyone's permission. My wife and I do a lot of missionary travel and so many occupations would not allow that. So many employers wouldn't! My agency has been over the top supportive of my and the things I do. They are incredible folks and I owe them a lot.
I do mostly employee benefits packages but other things as well. I'm pretty involved in our association and also politically. I've been to our state legislation sessions many times and D.C. for federal lobbying 3 times. I'm pretty outspoken when it comes to things I have a passion about.
