Jeffrey's Story

i've had a request from casey (aka karen) to catch you all up on the lfe and times of jeff meyer. so here we go - condensed version: married twice - divorced twice (great batting average). two children, thomas (21) and ali (19). government bureacrat for past 13 years. been a single dad for many years - ali has lived with me for all but six months since her sixth grade year. i'll tell you this, raising a teenage is not easy task, and for all you ladies out there who had to go through junior/high school hell, my hats off to you. flash - girls can be mean to one another!!! as much as i may seem i'm complaining, its been a great trip. she's still living with me as she has learned it cheaper to live at home and have dad pay your bills. besides, as she says, she's daddy's little girl. she's studying at ARC right now, trying to figure out what to do. the flavor of the day is physical therapy - a perfect career choice as she has spent the last five-six years in and out of physical therapy for her knees (five surgeries in four years). moma don't let your daughters play volleyball, at least not year-round and wait til they get into high school. currently she works as a receptionist at - SURPRISE - the debbie meyer swim school! she is also an aspiring "dj", one of the few females in the area. thomas on the other hand has been, well, a boy. not much drama, except when we didn't learn until the day before high school graduation that he would actually graduate. seems like california treats 18 years old as adults - they can check themselves out of school without notifying parents. between this as texas hold-em, well , lets just say the grades suffered and so did his choices of colleges. he didn't get into where he wanted, so he went to sierra college. he also moved out right after graduation (unlike his sister, he didn't care if it was cheaper to live at home, it just wasn't cool!!!). i have to admit he has done well. he graduated this spring with three degrees, a 3.5 gpa, is transferring to ucsb (with a townhouse 2 1/2 blocks from the beach in carpinteria), while working as a waiter at fats in folsom! he moves the first week in aug and starts school in sept. the folks are doing well. my dad (bud) is 85 and still working (my mom would probably kill him if he was at home all day). he just retired from running and starting swim meets last july. he started when we all started to swim in 1960. many years, the last twenty of which were working with masters swimming. we had a 'meyer' famliy race at his last meet in santa cruz. lots of fun - and yes - she did beat me. my mom (betty) had bypass surgery last november and fell in may and fractur...Expand for more
ed six ribs and punctured her lung. as you know she is a tuff old bird and is recovering well. as for me - approaching 53, overweight, need to get back into the pool, but life has been okay. a few blips along the way. didn't do too well with marriage, but two great kids. besides, they have taught me a lot about relationships, especially ali. as a dad/mom, we talk about ALMOST everything. it hasn't been easy, but i'm learning to listen and give advice/direction only when asked (well, that one's still work in progress). besides, how many dads out there can provide fashion tips, console after a bad haircut, buy tampoons, give advice on boys, and yes, pick up birth control pills at the pharmacy! so life is moving along, just need to focus a little more on myself now. as ali said recently, "dad, you've taken care of us all these years, now its time to take care of yourself". i think she has other motives, she's tired of my fashion and boy advice and wants me to find a step-mother for her. as said recently, not enough estrogen in the house! hope to see everyone at the reunion! other important/unimportant facts: - moved from ashton drive to manila, philippines, june 1973 - graduated from the international school on manila, may 1974 - freshman year college, oceanography major at university of washington, seattle: 74-75 - gave up the chilhood dream when told there would be few if any jobs due to government budget cuts. - transferred to stanford summer 75. yeah, i know. i still keep wondering how and why. i guess having a debbie and sherm can't hurt. - graduated with b.a. in econ (fuzzy studies) in jun 78, but not that serious of a student. - went back to philippines until summer 79. - family bought boat store in folsom 80, sold in 85. a lot of hard work, good fun, and lots of time on water. - married in 87. son thomas, daughter ali. - worked in banking industry - separated/divorced = 96/98. - started working for county of el dorado (in placerville) in 96. - got married in jun 01. failed at blending families. separated/divorced 02/03, - left county to work for city of folsom as budget manager in apr 04 - left folsom to return to county as deputy director on development svcs (building and planning), feb 5, 07. - countrywide announced subprime mess, mid feb, 07 - spent next 12 months reacting to collaspe of new home building by cutting budgets, laying off staff, and all the problems and guilty feelings that go along with it. - aug 07: decided that there had to be something better out there. - joined calaveras county water district as finance director in feb 08. - defintely better, but still dealing with budget problems, just not as severe.
