Jeffrey Ridgway:

CLASS OF 1974

Jeffrey's Story

Life After high school, I attended Purdue University ( Lafayette IN). I majored in engineering geology, wanting to pursue a career in geologic field work. Unfortunately, because of a recurring leg injury, I had to drop out of school, and when it didn't heal properly, I got a leg operation. I finally was able to get healthy enough to adapt to walking around Campus, and received my bachelor's degree in 1981. (It's ironic because I loved track & running so much in High School!) Then I pursued a Master's degree in geophysics, which I got in 84. A research assistantship from NASA grant paid my graduate education, and I worked on a very interesting thesis (interesting for Geophysics Wonks!). After graduation, I worked in petroleum exploration for 2 years in Texas. Didn't like the Texas heat, and the oil industry had a downturn in 1986. I left Texas for Washington DC in 86, to work for NASA as a scientific programmer/analyst. Did this for five interesting and productive years, then came out to California to pursue my Ph.D. in geophysics at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. ith lots of enjoying the beach etc., I got my Ph.D. in 1997. Met my wife Margarita in 1996. I stayed on at Scripps for 2 years doing post-doctoral research in marine geophysics, then I got a job with a local research firm (ISL Inc.), mostly researching applications for Navy technology. Margarita and I married in 1999. My daughter Amanda was born in the Fall 1999. I'm still here in San Diego, enjoying the (usually) great weather, trying to keep up with the demands of a very busy job, and being a husband to my wonderful wife and a father to my wonderful daughter. I still have fond memories of Mount Lebanon High School, the friends I made there, Pittsburgh, the Steelers, all of the friends, families and church groups growing up, Autumn leaves brightly colored, and the Pennsylvania forests and rivers. But life is pretty good in San Diego, (except when there are earthquakes or massive fires!). I'd love to hear from other classmates. We don't always appreciate the outstanding education we received back at Mount Lebanon. (Although I wish now that I'd taken Spanish instead of German!) Best regards to everyone, Jeff Ridgway
