Jeffrey's Story

Sometimes, while cruising down the highways of life, I observe my internal dialogue asking questions of me. This usually happens at the more monotonous moments. Questions ,it seems to me, fall into 2 categories. Rhetorical and Concise. Of those two, rhetorical questions are really not questions at all. They are statements. The question is the answer. Of concise questions, it seems they fall into 3 categories. The Known. The Unknown. And the Unknowable. It is usually in the Unknowable that I find myself swimming. Let's by-pass the Known questions for a moment, as they are almost the same as rhetorical. Why do dogs bark? Why did that frog jump into the pond as I passed by? Why is the sky blue? Easy stuff. But they are asked anyway. Anything to keep the internal dialogue going. To stay grounded. To keep the illusion of "I" from disappearing. The answers to the Unknown are out there. Usually, by shutting down the internal dialogue, they worm their way in. How is it that I perceive this objec...Expand for more
t as solid? Is it true that nothing touches anything? Why do Einsteinian equations break down under the scrutiny of quantum physics? How does the vibrational energy described by String Theory manifest itself as a Big Mac? Did my grandfather E¹¿ really slither out of some Primordial ooze? The answers to these questions, while Unknown, are in fact knowable. They just require a bit of non-effort to perceive. But it's the Unknowable that is the icing on the Cake of Life. There's not a lot of them. It seems to me that they fall into the categories of Space, Time and Sentient Existence. And I think, in reality, there is really only One True Question. But I don't know what that question is. And that is what keeps all of this other stuff interesting. At least for me. And one more thing. Truth be told- I really don't want to know it. So, it's not the Answer I'm seeking. It's The Question. The Question is The Answer. So, it's rhetorical. And not a question at all. jd at imagesofcapecod dot net
