Jennifer's Story
It's been almost 20 years since I left Cox High School. I went to VCU and got my BA in English and my Masters degree in Early Childhood Education. I fell in love with a Richmonder who graduated from Va Tech the year before I finished college. His name is Richard Franklin, and we were engaged by the time I left VCU.
We got married a year after I graduated. We lived in Alexandria for 4 years while I taught kindergarten for Fairfax Co. and he did his electrical engineering for several companies. After a while in VA, he decided he wanted to get his masters degree, too, so we drove all the way to California where he studied at UCLA. I taught kindergarten in LA while he went to school. That was a wonderful experience. I learned to speak Spanish since half my students didn't speak English, and I have been happily studying the language ever since.
LA was interesting, but it didn't feel like home. Rich didn't want to go back to VA, so when he finished his masters, we moved to San Diego where he got a job working as a telecommunications engineer. I half-heartedly pursued a teaching job h...Expand for more
ere while whole-heartedly pursuing having a family. About a year and a half after we moved here we had our son, Nicholas who is now 7. Three years later we had our daughter, Laura (aka Lulu) who is 4. Both of them are precious and wonderful beyond belief, and I know I was always made to be a mom. I never did get another teaching job, and I am very thankful to be able to stay home with my kids. I am busy taking care of them, while not entirely neglecting myself. Those who knew me in high school will be shocked to learn that I have run about 10 5K's and even one 8K since my daughter was born! I am thrilled to be in San Diego, and I can't imagine ever leaving. I even convinced my parents to move out here last summer after my mom retired from teaching at Trantwood! So, now I have babysitters! My brother lives in Santa Barbara, so I'm slowly moving the whole family to the West Coast.
I am still very good friends with Cheryl Adams (now Smith) and even talk to Deirdre (DeeDee) Jeroy (now Hurst) a few times a year. I am looking forward to seeing some other old friends at our 20th reunion.
