Jennifer's Story
Life
After high school I went to St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas and majored in Theatre Arts. I had a great experience there, and earned a B.A. in 1993. After working in Austin for a year, I went back to St. Ed's half-time to get a teaching license. I finished my student teaching in the spring of 1996 and decided it was time to get closer to West Virginia. I came home for a couple of months while I looked for a teaching job in North Carolina or Virginia.
I was hired to teach Drama and English at A. L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, North Carolina. I have been teaching there since August of 1996.
In 2002 I married Wesley Black, and on July 21, 2004 we had a daughter, Theresa Megan.
In 2007, I became a candidate for National Board ...Expand for more
certification, completing a portfolio and testing. Unfortunately, I did not score high enough to achieve certification on the first try. I re-submitted two portfolio entries. While one entry did score higher, the other did not, so I will be trying one more time to improve my score.
After a one-year separation, my husband and I divorced in December 2008. Things, overall, have been cooperative and peaceful. We share custody of our daughter Theresa, and she sees her dad nearly every day.
Theresa is now four years old, and started a pre-K program through the school system this fall. She is doing very well, and loves her teachers.
I continue to sing in the choir at my church and help in other ways when I can.
Life isn't perfect, but I'm happy.
