Jennifer's Story

Life A little about me: I graduate from Uconn with a BS in Molecular Biology, and have been pretending to be a scientist, ever since. I work for Abbott Labs in MA, and have been there for 5 years now. Love the work, love the people, hate corporate politics. It's my dream to get my PhD and become a college professor with my own research lab one day. Almost made it to Africa a few years to do volunteer work for orphans with HIV. The trip got cancelled, but I will make it there some day! :) I live in central MA, have my own apartment, and two adorable adopted cats. I have two tattoos on my back: the chinese symbol for "courage" and the Buddhist symbol "Ohm". Used to have my nose pierced, and plan to get it done again. I love rocking the boat, especially in corporate land. It's so conservative and everyone has to "fit the mold" that I love show people how to open their minds and accept intelligence and ambition in any form it comes in. I've been so fortunate to work with some of the most brilliant minds in science, and they totally march to the beat of their own drummer. I love doing volunteer work: I've been a corporate team leader for the National Arthritis Foundation's walk for the cure, and have participated in Juvenile DiabetesResearch Foundation and AIDS walk/runs for a cure. I used to volunteer teach in inner city schools, and have participated in work place mentoring through my company. Some of those kids are absolutely amazing! I definitely plan on traveling to Africa, Australia, Thai...Expand for more
land, Japan and India in my lifetime. My favorite books are "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Wuthering Heights", and "How to eat a fried worm". All VERY classic literature. ;-) Please feel free to shoot me an email sometime, I'd love to hear from you! School Oh wow. Flashback time. I LOVED college, hated highschool. I was so shy and caught inside my shell during highschool. Then college has this way of making you break out. It definitely becomes "sink or swim time", not just academically but socially as well. I think I get crushes on teachers easily: my last one was on my calculus teacher, freshman year in college. He looked just like the fashion designer Todd Oldham. Cute! Cute! Cute! The teacher who inspired me the most, was Mrs. Murphy at the conservatory: it was her lecture on HIV that made me suddenly realize I wanted to be a scientist. It's funny though, I was more certain about my life's path at the age of 13, than I am now. One of my favorite jokes is by the commedienne Paula Poundstone, "Why do grown ups always ask kids what they want to be when they grow up? 'Cause they're searching for ideas". But, in terms of talking about inspirational teachers, I don't think any other teacher inspired me to appreciate literature, more than Mr. B. There are just too many great memories from college to list, but I made some of my closest friends there, who I am still friends with today. If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't re-do anything, I would just love to relive what I could.
