Jennifer's Story

I was the misfit who played sports. I definitely wasn't popular and got average grades. Went to the CC JVS junior and senior year and "majored" in Word Processing/Secretarial. I always wanted to be an actress when I grew up, but that never panned out. It's a rough business filled with rejection and my self-esteem just couldn't take it. I like to blow off steam by venting to friends or getting a relaxing massage. The wildest thing I ever did in school? Ummmm, can't say. : ) I moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1989 and have been here ever since. I worked at North Carolina State University (go Wolfpack!) for 7 years doing various things, then went to work in private industry (pays WAY better) in 1996 and still work there. I'm a billing manager and I have 5 people on my team. I LOVE animals and really have a passion for them. I was a vegetarian for 5 years because I couldn't abide the thought of eating an animal. But, that went out the window Thanksgiving 2007. I felt like a coward for giving up, but I just couldn't remember why I was a vegetarian. I'd love to be a veterinarian but 6 years of school ain't my thing. Working with animals, while rewarding, pays bupkiss. I volunteered at a no-kill animal shelter for awhile until my back couldn't take the labor any longer. I have 3 cats (no, not a crazy cat lady that knits them sweaters) and they're my children. I adore animals so much I've been known to leave flyers on people's windshields if they take their dog out with them when the temperature is higher than 70 degrees (and believe me, in Raleigh during the spring/summer/fall, i...Expand for more
t's higher than 70 degrees). I don't care if you crack the window, it's TOO HOT folks. If you love your dog, leave him/her at home. Life has been surprising, I'll say that My father passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Eve 1995. That was very hard. I just turned 40 on 6/29/08, and I have a very different life than the one my teenage self imagined. It's a good life, just different! If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the kitchen and add on a sun porch. My dream home would be a beach house. My current age is 40. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely dreaming. My best friend would tell you I'm hilarious, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as intimidating. In 10 years, I hope to be wealthy. I'm going to get there by marrying rich : ). My first job was at DeBartolo Corp, where I got paid slave wages to push paper. What I remember most about it is seeing Bernie Kosar in the lobby. I met Keanu Reeves at the Hard Rock Cafe in Myrtle Beach, SC. He's a really nice man and very handsome. He posed for a photo with me, resting his head against mine (I was the only one he got that close to, why I don't know). I also met Hilary Clinton when she was campaigning for Bill during his first Presidential bid. She was pressing the flesh, signing autographs while I was just observing. She reached through 3 rows of people to shake my hand. I must've looked like a crazy nut?! : ) Marianne Gromley-Dent and I are STILL friends and have kept in touch over the years. I visit her when I'm home. She's one of my best friends.
