Jeremy's Story

Life Most of my life is college & what I am studying, but I'll try to avoid that here, since it will be mentioned in the "college" section. I live in a huge Victorian in Oakland, CA. My roommates are other students, and are also all friends. I write daily. (see "college for more info"). I have a child, Lux Cocker, who lives in Santa Barbara with her mother. I see her monthly, & she just turned two. As a white, middle-class male, I enjoy a charmed life. But it seems, more and more, that I'd have a much better shot at being published in the field of unconventional poetry if I were a non-white, lower-class, female, somewhat discontent with a not-so-charmed life. As far as leisure goes, I enjoy uppers & dancing (especially to the jazz tunes of the 20's & 30's). I don't go out too often, but I occasionally indulge in fine dinning. I own 14 fitted white tux shirts, 5 tailored suits, 2 tuxedos, 6 casual hats, 3 formal hats, 6 pairs of cufflinks, minimal jewelry, 3 pairs of overly-worn fitted jeans, 9 pairs of formal vintage shoes, 6 antique sunglasses, a 2 reversible belts from Target. Several times a week, I sleep at my lover's house, or she sleeps at mine. We have been dating for nearly 3 years & have traveled together from Santa Barbara, to Los Angeles, to Oakland. I occasionally have the impulse to ask her to marry me, but refrain, as she makes evident her more than occasional impulse to not get married. We have our ups and downs, and she is most literally my dearest friend and personal confidant. I've little reason to remember my life without her, and would not wish to imagine a future with her absent. I am often a crumbling structure, and she, the scaffolds holding me up. Given that the only people ...Expand for more
who might read this are other alumni of Brethren Christian or Westmont College, I suppose it's of interest to mention that I am no longer an "active member of the church." This is not say that I have denounced what I have learned from scripture, but only that the Church, as a building or series of buildings inhabited by a many people with many different beliefs, is no longer a place I find comfort or grace. This could result in any number of long conversations, so just email me if you'd actually like more information. Those readers who graduated from BCHS may or may not have noticed my absence in what would have been my senior year. I did in fact have a senior year, but at Redondo Union High school. I simply needed change, and the decision was further encouraged as a result of most of my friends having graduated a year before I would. Those readers who graduated from Westmont College may or may not have noticed my absence in what would have been my junior and senior years. Once again, I needed a change of seen for much more obscure and complex reasons, so ended up enrolling in and graduating from the College of Creative Studies at UCSB, where I obtained a BA in Creative Studies with an emphasis in literature. After graduating, I moved back to L.A. for a year, wear I worked a menial job & researched grad schools. That year can be summed up in the memories of my weekly outings to a 20's bordello/ speakeasy/ theatrical club in West Hollywood called Bricktop's (at the Parlour Club). The only grad schools I applied to were those I could find in the San Francisco Bay Area. Which brings me to now: attending Mills College where the general tone of the Graduate Poetry department is one of experimentation.
