Jeri's Story

I went to Stephen F. Austin in the fall of '69 with a double major in home economics/elementary education. Barbra Persicano and Patty Miller were also there but we all found different sets of friends and drifted in different directions. Of course, I fell in love with a forestry major, got married in the summer of '72 then begin to practice home ec instead of teaching it. We were married, had two beautiful children (born at Spring Branch Hospital), transferred to Midland, Texas then after 23 years, divorced when he decided his secretary was the best thing since ?????????????? The top ten best things about that situation: 10) Got to listen to music as loud as we wanted to whenever we wanted to. 9) Lost a boatload of weight. 8) Bought my first house in my name by myself. Does that make me a big girl now? 7) Found out I don't have to be married to be happy and can provide for myself. 6) He paid for my education before he left. 5) Two great kids and one grandchild. 4) Discovered I am a country girl at heart. 3) Decorated my bedroom the way I wanted to without a decorator telling me what was in or shoving colors down my throat. 2) Found a wonderful, christian, loving, caring man 10 years younger to marry. 1) Got to return to church and my christian lifestyle. If I had one do over, I guess it would be to stay in touch with my school friends and be closer to my two younger brothers. Moving to Midland was a big surprise but it is a great place to raise kids. Just the thought I my wild child being loose in Houston brings a cold chill to my soul. Heck, I don't trust a thing he says or does now and he's 31 with a wife and child. At least in a smaller environment, I could call friends in the police department to find out where he was and what kind of trouble he ha...Expand for more
d caused that day. I guess I'm just jealous because that kid tried everything I was too scared to try. The most interesting thing my high school friends would be surprised about is the fact that I edited the Sandstorm publication during my senior year at the University of Texas Permian Basin. It was the first year that the publication won any honors for design, layout, editing etc. Writing was not something I was very successful or interested in during my time in high school. Who knew I would place in any writing competition or would be elected to Sigma Tau Delta for writing. Can you believe I was even mentioned in Who's Who Among American Teachers? I still remember the counselor's voice telling my mom not to waste money on sending me to college and to sign me up for shorthand, typing, etc. One thing I can't believe I did after high school is volunteering to work on an ambulance as an EMT. I was part of the charter group in establishing West Harris County EMS. Boy, was that an eye opener. Those so called bedroom commuities in Katy sure looked different during the night runs with overdoses, teens running around all hours for the night and drunk as a skunk. Some people dream of being back in high school but I wouldn't go back in a million years. I was just one of the crowd, had no self-confidence, and just wanted to hide behind the smart, popular kids in the back of the room. God forbid any teacher should ever call on me to answer a question. I was embarrased to even take up space in the classroom. There is one thing I wish I could say to the teachers who didn't think I was a very smart person. . . Look at me now . . . I graduated with a degree in English . . . cum laude with a 3.98 GPA . . . made the president's list every semester . . . even if I didn't finish school until 1992! Who knew what I could really do in 1969?
