Jerry's Story
After high school I joined the Coast Guard and was stationed on an ice breaker right after boot camp. An ice breaker is a ship that breaks paths through thick ice flows in the arctic and antarctic. Spent a whole Summer in Antarctica on a science mission, mapping the ocean floor, taking core samples from the bottom of the ocean floor. We discovered a bay hidden under ice on the coast of Antarctica and charted it filling in the edges of the map. We also discovered an enormous under sea canyon system that dwarfs the Grand Canyon and charted it as well. It was nice to be a part of such discoveries. While leaving the Antarctic we encountered the highest seas ever recorded in the Antarctic ocean at that time with waves as high as the mast on our ship.

r a while and then went to school to become a pharmacist. After graduating from the School of Pharmacy ULAM in Monroe, La I joined the Air Force. While in the Air Force I served as Pharmacist for the 7th Bomb Wing then for the 1st Fighter Wing, then for the 4th Fighter Wing and for an Air Mobility Command. After completing the Combat Adviser Training course at Fort Polk Louisiana (at 50 years old) I deployed to Afghanistan as an adviser with a Medical Embedded Training Team embedded with an Afghan army unit to teach them how to treat their wounded, set up and run a small hospital. Had my bell rung by a rocket and a few other close calls.
Two years after returning from Afghanistan I retired from the Air Force with a pension and now work for a Veterans Administration pharmacy part time in South Carolina.
