Jerry's Story

Life -April of '82 joined Navy to be a diver. -Dec. 25,'82 cut hair into mohawk at girlfriend's house and crashed my parents going away/Xmas party in my honor (people I didn't know started handing me their watches. My Dad just laughed and shook his head.Mom was stuck on,"Oh MY GOD, etc.,etc."!) -Dec. 26,'82 shipped off to bootcamp in San Diego, Ca. Had to go through the gas chamber twice for making jokes. Graduated in top 5% in March '83. -March '83 went to Naval apprentice school for firefighting and building trades. Graduated top in class with honors. Got to pick anywhere in the world I wanted to go. Went to Navy Diver training in Hawaii! Got in bad accident and dropped from school due to injuries and 5 mos in hospital. -Sent to submarine base Pearl Harbor and fixed submarines. -Transfered to first ship (U.S.S. Jason)in Pearl Harbor, first time at sea (for me) and we get hit by another ship, broad side! Instant explosions and fire. 1 guy killed. Cut out the picture of "Captain Crunch" (favorite cereal)and attached it to the other ships captain's parking spot sign. The Navy was pissed, but we laughed for days! -'86 got selected out of 15,000 applicants to participate in the "Project Deep Freeze" Antarctic expedition. Bastards dropped me due to my prior accident injuries. Started sky diving. -June '87 Finally passed medical screening for re-entry to dive school! (Had to do "Hell Week" all over again)! Graduated as class leader. Glad that was over!!!! -Flown to Persian Gulf to (U.S.S. Acadia)for the U.S.S. Stark incident (missile up the poopshoot from our buddies in Lib...Expand for more
ya). Can't tell ya what we did or I'd have to kill ya! -Arrived to new home in San Diego, Ca. dba "Consolidated Divers Unit". Bounced to the Phillipines, Persian Gulf, Diego Garcia,Hong Kong, China,raised/salvaged crashed airplanes and helicopters, dove to 300 ft, got bent (decompression sickness), looked for enemy bombs, blah, blah, blah. -'90 went to First class dive school (advanced deepsea diving, explosives, salvage, and supervisor) in Panama City, Fl. (during Spring Break!!!!!) OH MY GOD!!! It was epic! -Aug '90 went back to San Diego. Same routine, except I was in charge (translated to "My ass is REALLY in the hot seat NOW!" Supervised dives to recover a lost underwater robot in 7,500ft of water using my divers and the submarine "Alvin" (recognized by you fellow Nat. Geographic/Discovery Channel fans). That was cool. -'92 Got married to a print add model (huge mistake)!! Then transferred back to Hawaii to a ship I really had to BE on. That sucked, but living in Hawaii took the edge off!Dove in the Bearing Sea above the Arctic Circle (don't ask). -'94 Started a small import company (Pier1 type of stuff)traveling on leave to do my buying. Waaay cool! -'95 got out of Uncle Sam's canoe club to help Mom & Dad start a bakery/coffee shop business. -'95 Elected to V.P. of the Tuolumne County Arts Council and Downtown Sonora Business Owners Association. (I'm a stone sculptor who likes community service-really) This is getting way too long and boring! Feel free to give me a buzz so I can hear about what YOU have been up to! Jerry Hertz (215) 681-3829
