Jerry's Story

Life I had a scooter accident which ended my life on two wheels but I bought a Yamaha ATV in October 2009 and have been doing some riding on the back roads of Randolph County West Virginia where I live during the hot months of the year. My longest ride so far was 72 miles. On the 24th of May 2010 we will have been married for 42 years I have been married to Malinda Gibson from Beckley WVA. I retired from the Calvert County Public Schools in 2003. We have two children, Robert who is Cavalry Scout in the Army. He is now a drill instructor at Fort Beiing , Georgia. He served in Iraq for two years and is now be back in the USA . He has two daughters and a son. Jennifer was also in the US Army and got out as a sergeant. She served in Afghanistan for six month before returning to the 101 Airborne Division. Jennifer served in IRAQ for a year and is now working fulltime and going to college fulltime. Jenny was married on the 19th of December 2008. Malinda and I spend as much time in the mountains of West Virginia as we can. We now live in Huntingtown, Maryland. My favorite place to eat is at the Hutte in Helvetia West Virginia. It is a small Swiss village located deep in the remote mountains of Randolph County West Virginia. You can not get there with a GPS !!! College I enjoyed my time at Concord and the most important part of my college life was finding teachers who really did care if I learned. I found that going to class was made enjoyable because of the caring teachers. Concord is a great place if you like small classes and people who are really interested in your education. I think that the less than serious student might find that there is not enough social life. Some kids might miss the big malls of urban areas but what are you there for shopping or learning. Yes Concord changed my life !! Workplace I retired in June 2003 and substitute taught for the next four years a few days each year. Each year I seem to do fewer days. I started teaching in 1971 at Calvert High School in Calvert County, Maryland. The first year I worked with the Student Council the next year I was asst. football coach. In 1973 I was assigned to Northern High School in Owings Maryland. From 73-78 I was assissant football coach. Then in 1977 I became head track coach and stayed in that position till 1981. During my time as track coach I was named conference coach of the year and my team won the state track championship. In 79,80 and 81 they won the district championship. In 1981 I became Athletic Director and stayed in that position until 1986. I was the Varsity Cub sponsor from from 1977-92. I then got involved in our foreign exchange program and led groups to Isreal and four times to Japan. From 1986 to 2001 I taught Internati...Expand for more
onal Communication on Negotiations Simulation which was very much like the United Nations. My students represented a nation and had to represent the positions of that country. The class was guided by the University of Maryland and we had real time meeting with students from all over the United States. During the years the student played Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, Argentina, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Kenya and some countries that I just can not remember. As far as the teaching this was the best thing I was ever involved with. I was inducted into the Northern High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach and Athletic Director. During my time as Athletic Director I was able to select a new mascot logo, redesign the school varsity letter, redesign the school letter jacket and make it a requirement that that EMTs or a doctor be on site at every football game in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. I have been the commander of the Sons of the American Legion in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland for the last eight years. I have been a member of the Sons of the American legion for ninteen years I always wanted to be a pilot when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were right. Riding my four wheeler If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have fun, people, and good pay to be able to deal with the day-to-day. The person outside of my parents who inspired me was my high school principal Mr. Pickett I like old movies and movies that inspire. My children have both taught me that you can do much more than you think you can. If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to my kids, then spend the rest on a new house, travel and charity. I was so busy studying that I had little time for anything else My current age is 64. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be retired. I was so completely right. I wanted to be a teacher and coach and that was exactly what I did My best friend would tell you I'm compassionate, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as hardhead. I wear jeans and casual shirts just like when I taught I share my home with wife, which I find great. I am a charter member of the Northern High School athletic hall of fame. I was also selected favorite teacher by the students at NHS. I was once coach of the year in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. I was the head coach of the NHS state championship track team in 1980 In 10 years, I hope to be enjoying life. I'm going to get there by doing the same as now. My first job was at packing factory, where I got paid 1.25 to 1.77. What I remember most about it is the job was very hard. Living in Australia for three years and going to the Olympic Games.
