Jerry's Story

Life After graduating from Valhalla, I worked there as a classroom aide and track/cross country coach for five years. I coached the first CIF champs in the school's history, girls' cross country in 1978. Also worked summer school jobs at Monte Vista and Granite Hills before giving up on going into education and changing career paths. I joined the San Diego Police Department in 1982 and was there for the next three decades. I worked as a patrol officer, a recruiting officer, and a detective in the Vice unit before being promoted to sergeant in December 1995. As a sergeant, I commanded a patrol squad, worked as the administrative sergeant of an area station, oversaw the management and development of the department's facilities, and spent four years as the coordinator for the Regional Academy. In August 2008, I was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and spent a couple years overseeing investigations and administration at the Department's Northern Division. After a short stint at our Northwestern Division, I returned to the Academy to oversee the Department's Training Division. In December 2012, I hung up my gunbelt for the last time and called it a career after 30 years. I married my wife, Julie (VHS class of 1980), in November 1980. She also was an officer on the police department, as was her father. We have three...Expand for more
children. Our oldest daughter, Emily, graduated from George Washington University and gained her Master's and teaching credential at the University of Michigan. She is now teaching at Helix HS and her husband is a corporate attorney. They gave us our first grandchild in July 2010, a wonderful little grandson, and gave us another in December 2012. They are precious boys and my little buddies. Our younger daughter, Sarah, also graduated from GW and is teaching French and math at Classical Academy Charter HS in Escondido. Our son, Randy, has followed the family tradition and is working as a detective in SDPD's Economic Crimes Division. His wife is an award-winning author who gave us third grandson in March 2015! He, too, is an adorable boy whom we love very much. And our one-and-only granddaughter came along in 2017! She is also a treasure. We have been very busy over the years with youth sports, church activities, and the like, but things changed as the kids left the nest. We like to travel and look forward to doing much more of it as the years go on. We're season ticket holders for the Padres and like to keep fit by walking and hiking. We are enjoying retirement very much. Life is good! I trust all my old buddies are doing well (God rest Mark Simons and Steve Speitel) and hope to hear from some of you. Jerry
