Jill Shelley earned her B.S. in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati in 1980 and her M.S. in Criminal Justice in 1990. She was awarded the Dr. Robert Byron Mills Memorial Graduate Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Criminal Justice in 1990, and co-authored an article titled: “The New Lone Ranger; Policewomen on Patrol” in 1991. Professor Shelley spent 10 years as a full-time patrol officer and then became a part-time police officer for 14 years so that she could begin a new career as a professor at NKU. She is a certified Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy instructor and enjoys teaching new recruits in the police academy. Shelley, along with her husband, was awarded the Outstanding Police Officer Jerry Beitman Memorial Award in 1985, for performing CPR for over 40 minutes and successfully saving a man’s life. Since 1980, Professor Shelley has conducted women’s self-defense and sexual assault prevention seminars in the tri-state to various private and public businesses and groups. KU in 1996, and was awarded the Spark Honoree Presidential Award in 2002. She enjoys teaching the policing and forensic courses at NKU, some of which include: Police in America, Criminal Investigation, Advanced Crime Scene Techniques, Criminal Profiling and Criminal Evidence. She takes her students on many diverse field trips and each spring conducts an all day forensic science field trip which includes: ballistics presentations, shooting a pig’s head for blood spatter analysis and bomb demonstrations. Each semester she offers her students the opportunity to ride with the Cincinnati Police Department for extra credit. Professor Shelley has been conducting CSI camps for the past 7 years for middle and high school aged students in the tri-state. Each year at NKU, she conducts several Forensic Science Days for area schools to come participate in hands-on activities. She conducts programs at various schools as part of NKU’s Girls in Science and Technology program. Professor Shelley is the faculty advisor for Lambda Alpha Epsilon, American Criminal Justice Association, and is helps her students prepare for hands-on competitions in crime scene investigations and firearms. Professor Shelley is married to husband Gregg, who retired from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office after 32 years. He is currently the Crime Scene Investigator for the Clermont County Sheriff's Department. They have two daughters attending NKU, both majoring in Biology/Pre-Med. She is involved in many community activities, coaching both volleyball and fast pitch softball. Additionally, she volunteers extensively with the American Heart Association’s Go Red Campaign for women after having had two heart attacks.
