Jim's Story

Life I thank God for this life and every experience which helps me to understand why He made me and what is worth living and dying for. School years, I was so focused on doing well and getting good grades. And yes, I did well. Somewhere in the mid-1990s, I came to understand just how focused I was on all that stuff (most of which I forgot anyways), and how little focused I was on the people around me. My journey since then has been breaking the mold and relearning or rebuilding just about everything in my life, especially the priority of people. There are two threads that run through everything in my life. One is skating. I was enamored with Eric Heiden's performances in the 1980 Olympics. Following college, I began a (life-long) pursuit of speed skating well. Over these years, whenever I have been skating, it has been a kind of gauge of my hope and vision for life. In one difficult period of my life, I lost my skates altogether (they were in the basement, so it's a miracle I ever found them). Since finding them, I have struggled both with skating and with relationships, but I am working at both nonetheless. People tell me I am making some progress in both areas. (In 2005, I wrote a story of my life from the perspective of speed skating; it's in our family website myoasisonline <dot> net, under Articles & Stories). The other thread is my relationship with God. The spiritual journey as far as I am consciously aware of it began in 1973 when Jesus Christ became my savior. He was always there, but there were so many times when my faith was practically-speaking on the shelf. Throughout the most difficult periods in my life, it has always been the tender grace of God and Jesus' companionship that got me through. Lately, I recognize that God has brought along other people who help, guide, instruct and even ...Expand for more
chastise me. Thank God for such good friends, mentors and examples: Rick, Alger and Gloria, Andrew, Mike, Dr. Peterson, Dad and Mom Davis, Rod and Linda, my mom (still!), many more. Where would I be today if not for these? Haven't a clue, but I am so thankful for all these. I am a very wealthy person. I save the best for last... my family. Trudy and I have known very rough times together, and also very wonderful times. We are just starting to figure out some things about ourselves and each other, so that makes it even more interesting, and challenging. Over these years, one thing has continued to change: my appreciation for her has grown. I realize I have so much in her. I realize I am so fortunate to have her in my life. She models passion for life in a way I could scarcely have recognized before I met her. I have also learned so much from her (not just about finances). She was truly God's answer to the prayer I prayed on a park picnic table on my 25th birthday while stargazing late at night. Then there are our fabulous kids. I am so amazed from week to week as we watch them grow before us. Are these *our* kids? I am proud of them for all they do and attempt to do. What a privilege to be in their lives. If I could do one thing right by them, it would be to believe in them and encourage them to be all they were made to be, just like others in my life did for me. As I said before, I am a very wealthy person. My wealth is measured in people. And I don't mind the money either. That was a difficult lesson for me to learn, but I think I have it figured out now. People and relationships are everything; everything else is like dessert added to an already filling and nutritious meal. The best part for me is... We've only just begun to live!** Take care, Jim **Yeah, yeah, I grew up in the 1970s.
