Jim's Story
School
Biggest crush? That's trouble. Won't say. Had several, still stay in touch with some.
Teacher(s):
1) Mrs. Sellers, fourth grade. She read to us daily, including the Diary of Anne Frank and Dr. Doolittle. She encouraged us to write, and I won a contest that let me write a letter to Walt Disney, who replied.
2) Eva Boatright, fifth grade. She was FUN. She told us jokes that bordered on dirty and fed us weird things. Best day was when we went to a nearby house, where she yanked the head off a chicken, which ran around headless until dropping. Then we had to draw each of the internal organs before we dined on fried chicken.
3) Mary Slaton, 10th grade, English. Again, it was encouragement of writing and creativity. She was great.
4) Melva Haines, 11th grade, English. I hated her at the time. Despised her strictness and grading approach. In time, I realized that I was able to pursue writing as a career because of her.
Memories: a) Jack Rosenberger and I getting kicked out of 8th grade choir. b) Running around with Dave Bryant and our B-team friends during football season in my 10th grade year. c) Baseball in the senior year, especially the games I did best in (which followed drinking a couple of beers), and the game in whi...Expand for more
ch I got caught in a rundown between first and second and the chase went on forever. The umpire called me out and Darrell Miller shouted, "What for, delay of game?" I was never caught, but I ran out of the baseline and nearly passed out from exhaustion.
Workplace
My job as a university science writer utilizes all the skills from all of my previous jobs and education combined. I write about peer reviewed research in a variety of life and physical sciences, pitching my stories to national and international media, from broadcasts to all forms of print.
I have interviewed and spent time with astronauts, a president's wife (twice), governors, a former president, a foreign prime minister, famous scientists, including Nobel Prize winners, and professional athletes, and many more people in high places, but my greatest enjoyment waits for me at the end of each day: My family, pets and good friends. Work is fine, but it is not all to my life.
When stress hits ... I take a hike, in the mountains or along a river. In Oregon, I can do both at the same time!
My hero is Jimmy Carter, former president, but not for his time in the White House. His efforts for peace, free elections and Habitat for Humanity stand out. I've met him. I admire him.
