Jim's Story

After the military, I worked at several different vocations, until I settled on automotive repair as a proffesion. I absolutely loved what I did. I never got rich, but made enough to be comfortable. After many years, my services were no longer required, as several of my friends and I were downsized. I had a pretty good buy-out from Sears, and lost every penny to an ex-wife. Bad memories of that woman. I took a job on a temperary basis, and was seriously hurt, and disability for three years, before I went to work for the Emissions testing station in Cascade Park. In less than a year, I was promoted to station manager. Made less money that automotive work, but had a lot of fun, and worked very hard at remembering how it felt to be abused as an employee, and treated my people with the same respect as I expected for myself. I had a lot of fun on the job, even though I usually worked a 100 hour week. Nearly lost my wife to that, because I was never home. After that job, I went to work for an automotive warehouse as a delivery person, and was soon promoted to warehose manager, where I stayed until the company folded in Portland. I took a job as a temp for a while, until I could go back to college. I became a Medical Assistant, after recieving my AA, again. After applyning at more clinics than I can remeber, I found a position with the North Valley hospital in Tonasket WA, as a phlebotomist. Had a lot of fun doing that, and made a lot of friends with the MANY patients I delt with. Held that position for ten months, and was let go when the howspital distric shut off the money for several positions. I then went to work for the local ACE hardware, and nine months later was promoted to manager. Had a great time there, and met nearly all of the population of the town. But, because of all of the years that I worked and walked on concrete, in combination with a ruined knee from Viet Nam, I was forced by pain, to re...Expand for more
tire on 12-31-08. The store owner and a nintey percent of the town(my customers) still ask me when I'm comming back. For me, it's a real compliment to have twelve hundred people asking me to go back to work, because the current crew doesn't know how to take care of the customer. I retired because of extreem pain, but still have the majority of our small town asking for me to help them with their problems. Patting myself on the back, not bad for a city boy!! I gues I failed to mention, that the population of Tonasket is approximately 1500. Thats up from the eleven hundred that were here wehen we arrived in 2006. A four hundered people increase is nothing buy comparison to Vancouver's anual increase, but for this small town (not a city)The numbers are huge. I do miss the people that I dealt with in Vancouver, but, living on fourty acres, in a 2600 sqft home and a 1200 sqft garage, at only fifteen thousand more than we sold our nine hundred eighty foot ranch in Vancouver, is absolutely heaven. Deer are always around, and Moose make their way through several times a year. Summers are long, and Very hot, with temperatures as high as 117 degrees. Spring and fall are very pleasant, and winter is very long and very cold, with temperatures as low as 24 below zero! Blody cold!! And with the extreems in temperature, I could never move back to the city. In the summer, when there is huge travlerer traffic, we are annoyed with the ten car wait to make a turn on to or off of HWY 97. Ain't that a hoot! My son-in-law, a cop in St Hellens OR, said "it's so quiet out there, it's scarry! Doesn't want to be a cop here, because it's too quiet. I will be happy to see those that make it to the reunion, but will be happier when I get back home again! See you at the reunion. Jim Blystone I always wanted to be a happy when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dork. As it turns out, they were wrong!!.
