Jim's Story

Since I have been asked what to tell a little about myself, it is hard to tell all experiences from the past 50 some years, but here is the short version. I was raised on a farm and spent all my adolescent/teenage living in rural setting. It was not until I Honorable discharge for the Army, did I ever live in a city of any size (Phoenix, Arizona). The main reason is due to work, learning several trades and schooling. It was during this period that I started to learn a trade that I knew I had a true passion for. This trade is Parks & Recreation. I started as a Groundskeeper, Gardener, Trade Specialist, Foreman, Open Space Stewart/lake manger (City of Prescott), Parks Superintendent and a Parks Director of a County that is larger than some states (Yavapai County, Arizona) and a Director of a community in New Mexico. What other “life experiences” have I brought with me; while living in Phoenix/Goodyear, I made the decision to lower “my footprint on mother earth”. (In future conversations, there will be more conversations regarding “your footprint on earth”) For the past fifteen years I have lived on 60 acres in very remote Arizona. There was no electric, water or telephone to the property. Yet I lived as comfor...Expand for more
table as I did living in the city. The cabin is totally equipped with 110 & 12 volt electric. We had a 10KVW solar unit with a back-up propane generator. Because I hauled water, you learn to conserve and harvest rain water. 3000 gallons of water would last a family of two for two months. The only down fall was the drive to the city to work and make a living. While living in this remote area (used to be the largest cattle ranch in Arizona), I participate in the community as a Juniper Woods Landowner Association as a Board member, Vice-President and than President. I was a K-12 School Board member (Officer) and participated in many school activities. Other activities I participated in; I started the first Adopt-a-Lake in Arizona (Stone Dam), partner with the Kaibab National Forest. The second Adopt-a-Lake (Little Hell Canyon), partner with Kaibab National Forest & Jim Boyd and Friends. The third Adopt-a-Lake (Lynx Lake in Prescott, AZ) partnered with Prescott Leadership Academy (I graduated from) and Prescott National Forest. I also volunteered with an Adopt-a-Highway near Ash Fork AZ. My education is; Master in Public Administration and in Environmental Science. I also belong to the International Society of Arboriculture (16485)
